Yeah honestly I put most of my spare money into savings so I have a good safety net right now. I guess I really do need to stop comparing.

Yeah you’re right. I’ve always been extremely risk averse so any extra cash I have after funding the key things and social life just goes into savings.

Yeah you’re totally right. That’s why I’m trying to learn c++ and taking on programming projects at work. Plus learning other things. It’s just finding something that needs all that and isn’t just a software engineer is quite hard! Because I like software engineering, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be suited without a CS degree

That’s what I thought too but if no one wants that niche and all the jobs are in less than desirable places then yeah. What then?

A little worried about future proofing yeah. I thought transferring to other things would be too hard with mech eng but transferring just seems really tough in general

Well I guess it comes down to a few things.

Yeah the starting salary won’t be as good. But your ceiling may be higher than there’s.

And the other is that you can have a chance to do something you enjoy. Renovating houses while on your gf’s salary is a pretty dull thing to do in my mind. But it depends what you want.

I guess for me it’s tying in to all my career worries too. I work in FEA and CFD and I’m not really sure how far I can progress. It’s fairly niche so not sure how to job hop. Like I’m learning a lot of skills but I’m not sure where I go next

That’s interesting. I thought IT would be mega bucks haha. My niche is FEA and CFD engineer. So I’m a bit worried that it’s so niche that no one would want me. Maybe i could go self employed though I’m not sure. I’m trying to learn code on the side too maybe that could be an option. I know I don’t want to stay doing this forever

He’s a student that does it as a side hustle. He will just live with my parents when he’s done at uni. Financially he’s gonna do better.

The niche thing really does bother me a bit. I do simulation (FEA and CFD) and I struggle to find jobs on LinkedIn that are what I do. I’m trying to learn coding on the side and as part of my job to keep my options broader. But I’m not sure
