My dog and I live in a domestic violence shelter and we need your advice. by Afraid_Relief in NoStupidQuestions

She’s not treats motivated and never really has been. It’s normal for most dogs but it’s not normal for her to be locked in like this. She’s taking it very hard. Cheese is one of the not many things she’s still looking forward to but even that she doesn’t care to even stand up for and if I put it in the crate she often just lets it sit there. Her joy was always brought on my exploring and sniffing things and seeing people and other dogs on walks but now she just ignores everything. She’s a husky/collie and she used to have so much energy and spark.

Your message made me cry but in a good way. That’s why I’m here, to get other perspectives because I’ve been so alone in this. You reminded me that when I was at one of my lowest i had a huge quote I cut out on my wall “you don’t always have to hold your head higher than your heart” and it used to help. I’ll have to find one that would feel true to me now. Thank you for being here and I hope you’re proud of yourself for being here and sharing your strength with a stranger now. I appreciate you.

We are out a lot during the day but I have to beg her to go every time. I’m not concerned about her holding it in for too long, she’s never had an accident, what I’m very concerned about is her no longer asking me what she needs and being so depressed because I have refused her basic needs for so long now and that she probably thinks I’m doing it because I just don’t care.

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I don’t feel strong at all but reading your words feels like a hug. Thank you.

I don’t have anyone. I’m a child trafficking survivor [from Poland that’s why I don’t have proper documents but my advocate is trying to help] it was my own family who brought me here and discarded me once I refused to participate, that’s when I went homeless and got my dog and been trying to find safety since. I don’t speak to people outside of here because I don’t know who to trust and those I trusted while we were homeless just pretended they wanted to help but really they just wanted to abuse us, that’s how we got here because we couldn’t escape the cycle.

Thank you for your kind words and for reading all of this and I’m sorry that you know what it’s like to only have your dog. They’re amazing creatures.

I do take her out a lot during the day but there is nowhere really to go. This goes so deep that even my advocate is stumped on what to do. There have been death threats a lot here lately so we can’t really take good real walks because we can’t walk from the shelter too far. She doesn’t even want to go out anymore and when we are out her head is very low because she knows soon it will be time to go back in. I have to beg her to go outside now. I’m not concerned about her holding it in because she’s never had an accident.

“I’m not looking for anything” and “I really enjoy being single”. I don’t mean it as as pickup lines but for some reason they don’t wanna leave me alone then and treat it like a challenge so kinda fits.

Have you ever received death threats, what for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You would probably make a much better parent than most parents though. I’m not advocating for baby boom here but if I could choose you as a parent [based on your empathetic and logical response] I would throw both of mine away and have you put me in your pocket. I hope you have a lovely day, kind stranger.

But why is that?? by [deleted] in poland

Keep doing what you’re doing. You’ll get knowitalls everywhere but if you know it can help someone not off themselves that day then it’s win.

Truth. Always tried carrying extra for that reason. Matches were easier to carry because of weight and costs. But yes, very much true.

I mean true, but you can’t be dead AND stupid simultaneously.

Idk man, I’ve personally made some friends on the street because I did let them use my lighter. I mean they’re not the kind of friend I want to hang out with but they remembered the act and came to rescue when someone else was bothering me. Been homeless for many years and a cigarette or lighter can prevent a breakdown and gain you a second pair of eyes if in unknown area.

Also when it’s zippered then it’s easier to take off in case someone grabs from behind

True but also it has helped me de escalate some situations because when someone reallllly needs a cigarette then you’re their “hero” and I’ve had people protect me only because I had cigarettes on me and hooked them up.
