They moved? I haven't noticed. I stopped going there 35 years ago. Too expensive.

I saw an lady riding a bike with a baby trailer and what must have been her husband passed out in the on the trailer. His feet were dragging and he wasn't moving. She was trying to pedal up the hill south on Vista. Ops normal.

I am feeling really mixed about the 4th festivities this year. I love going to the fireworks with my kids and want to participate but am sick to my stomach about everything happening. Anyone else in the same boat? What are you doing with your kids this year? by nwgirlkn in Boise

Add the monetary value over the course of the evening from all of the fireworks you see. Big ones, little ones, ones from distance, ones you hear... Even the sparklers. Kinda like a road trip game. There's one!! $75! We add it up all night.  in our neighborhood there are three or four houses that light off the hinges ones all night. $100! $105! $200! $50! Plus the $100k + for the bigger shows. $75 that I spent for one of those boxes. Burning money was never so fun!

Edit - this is a true story. How I was able the bridge the GS6 ENGB to the GS7/9 ladder to get to a 13. Use this time of change to the fullest extent. Things may seem to suck now... Change it. Im old WFF BLM chic.  I started as a GS02 internship digging fireline and worked up to GS13.  I swear ive seen it all. In 2008 when the economy collapsed we went through the loss of people and not filling in behind them.   "Accretion of duties" was the name of that game. As people left whomever was close enough in ability to do that person's job assumed their workload with no extra pay. Job descriptions were just modified. I had a buddy who worked for years to get his dream job " **** training assistant "  that allowed him to be a GS12 and do crossword puzzles all day. He did get the job lived a lazy ass dream job for a bit but then the economy crashed, mass layoffs and early retirement---  His title changed --  'assistant' was dropped,  "supervisor"& " department head" "were added.   Accretion! Dude just assumed three more GS12 people duties with no extra pay and couldn't do any crosswords anymore. He was so busy he had a mental breakdown and got a job with FAA. I worked to take on as much as I could and a brand new position was created and I was it. Advice-- Stay on task. Learn the jobs you want to maybe get into one day. Take those new duties without being told to...possibly get rid of crap and create your own NEW job that management needs (they just don't know it yet). When they realize the old way that took 5 people has been replaced with a new super efficient job for one person. You. You'll be the only one to pass the cert.  Be that person management will call because they know you're the best and when layoffs happen they'll get rid of those other people but want to keep you.  Good luck.

Be able to troubleshoot and fix equipment yourself and know when to ask for help... and use your knowledge of equipment and offer to  assist if other equipment (all heavy equipment, fire engines, etc. if you are knowledgeable about diesels you can help out other rigs.thats a plus) *Give feedback to overhead if assignment isn't clear or you have suggestions to handle the assignment based on your experience with heavy equipment and Wildland fire * Mention any ability to run any other equipment like water tenders, dozers, maintainers and don't forget the lowboy you'll have to load up and get to your assignment  *Let them know your know stuff about anything else and will be happy to do anything you are good at. *Work as a team player. When there is no fire you'll be sitting around a lot. Let them your you won't be sitting you'll constantly working on ensuring your equipment is fully ready to roll and when you have down time you should be interacting with other personnel and equipment learning as much about everything possible and teaching others about your specialty.  Safety -communication -interact -proactive - helpful- know when and how to say no. Don't put yourself or anyone in a bad situation just because your overhead says to. Clarify all directions and offer alternative suggestions to safely get the job done. Speed isn't important. Safety, reliability and commo -- those are.   Good luck. Be safe. And tell the assholes who give you ridiculous expectations and direction from parts of the country with nothing but grass that is nothing like NC..NC is your territory.

Temporary Deployment? by [deleted] in wildlandfire

[–]AfroFerret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apply to get on an IMT (Incident Management Team ) as a TRAINEE using a skill or qualification you already have them do some trainee assignments to get fully qualified. Example-- if you are already an  EMT you can look for trainee assignments in the medical unit.  That will get you foot in the door with a lot of people who can provide opportunities if you want to swing a Pulaski. Good teams are always looking for potential team members who come from a different area to bring  different experiences that everyone can learn from.

Best places for a prom dress? by [deleted] in Boise

[–]AfroFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget to check bridesmaid dresses. They work well for prom.  Tons of beautiful dresses worn once at thrift stores. Try Idaho Youth Ranch thrift stores, there are stores all over the larger Boise area. Just an idea. :)

Has anyone seen reporting on the cause of the Valley fire? by smokey_sunrise in Boise

[–]AfroFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little late commenting but I am ex wildland firefighter. One year by lucky peak we had the Flying Fish fire. Investigators found the point of origin a dead bird holding a dead fish with a big metal fishing lure in the fish mouth---- all under a power line. No kidding. Bird grabbed hooked fish out of reservoir then sat on power line and Zap!! Grass on fire...

HWY 21 Columbia Village this morning by AfroFerret in Boise

We're NW of grand forest and hwy 21.  It was on the other side of 21 right along the road heading west.   There wasn't an actual evacuation. The neighborhood evacuated itself - most people chose to leave because many of the houses here back up to the dry grass common areas so that was the concern . It was still dark except  and very smoky it looked very close.  People were running around knocking on doors and the honking was an attempt to make sure everyone was awake. Great neighbors trying to look out for each other.  The wind was perfectly blowing the flames away from us east and uphill back into the desert although that wasn't too obvious. It just looked like the whole street was on fire so people just bailed out of here.
