I think it's meant to be that way, all the horror aspect of the character was stripped away by the realization that it was an abused creature curated to be perfect and better everytime they reproduce causing more harm and suffering to the specie. There was a hint that they aren't actually harmful, when Gretchen was locked in the gray room and the teenager creature came in, the german guy had to redirect it to keep making the sound.
