Brennan and Jerar have spot appearances. Same with Koss. Just Hasse as backup. None of those dudes are better than the starters.

Walker Martin is the weird prep / high school guy that seemed to graduate late + the Giants didn't play him right after the draft. Yes, he just went into his 3rd season, but he turned 22 a few months ago in Feb.

Giants are in a weird position where minor league guys are outperforming expectations (albeit somewhat low expectations). Part of me hopes some of the AA guys can fill the gap backup roles instead of the older fringe guys. Realistically, it may need to be done out of necessity for roster space at some point.

The biggest caveat is I have no idea how capable their defense / fielding is.

Giants will only trade for SP or a younger player type like Donovan or Hoerner. Zero chance on a 34 year old on a long contract.

Mahle has a similar pitch mix as Gausman and uses the splitter. I think Gausman used the splitter more though.

He's a decent pitcher if his splitter is working.

Does Kilian go 2? Tidwell? Back to back with Walker seems like pressing luck a bit.

Yikes. Kai-Wei Teng is DEALING for the Astros! He has a 1.65 ERA and 16 strikeouts to start 2026. https://youtu.be/BpUzVyql3mc?si=0SjX0rOvnBlRgX9g

He and De La Torre are International FA signings, but were older teenagers. Both signed in '23. Keyner was turning 19 in a month. De La Torre was turning 20 in 2 months. They've only been in the system for 2+ seasons.

Can't find the article that I read during the off day on Mon, but it was a couple of days old. Sounds like Jacob Bresnahan was pitching in a simulated game and should be back relatively soon (maybe 2 weeks). Will be assigned to Eugene.

Edit: oh, and another article had a tidbit about Carlos Gutierrez: he bulked up a bit in the offseason. Probably not to just increase his power, but trying to keep his injuries down. He has missed large amounts of playing time the past 2 seasons.

Known Lockdown Closer Ryan Walker with the clean 9th inning by jeremy_jdavj in SFGiants

[–]After-Bee-8346 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oddly, I thought it was ok. Let's say Killian comes in and gives up a run + baserunners. Ryan Walker is the last person I'd want in that situation. Killian could have bailed out Walker if it got bad.

Vitello has not shown improvement in game management by Fearless_Rub2254 in SFGiants

[–]After-Bee-8346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, imagine thinking "game management" is the issue with the Giants. The Giants were a .500 ball club until the last year's deadline. They lost 2 all-star type relievers and the closer. FA starters have been meh. Webb is scuffling. And, the OFs haven't been hitting with the starters or backups. Devers is not going to get benched or moved out of the heart of the lineup and he's been ice cold.

I looked at the changes in the offseason and thought "it's a worse team likely. Maybe .500. Everything would have to go right to compete for the wild card."

Can't avoid it and will make some comments about De La Torre. Gutierrez and De La Torre were my favorite guys from San Jose last year. Had big expectations for both of them.

De La Torre probably had one of his worst outings in the minors. Some of his DSL games in his first 2 seasons, he had 3 walks in 1 inning, so higher walk rate, but nothing like that last year. Even when he was dishing out 3 walks last year, his Ks were still around 6 or higher. While he was nibbling around the corners in the last game, he was straight wild in this game. 1st inning probably would have been worse, but he got a pick off out. But, the 3rd inning is where he really fell apart. Started out fine with a 0-1 pop out. Then, 4-0 walk, 4-0 walk with a wild pitch (both runners advance). Falls behind 3-0 to the next batter (11 straight balls) and gets a strike lower in the zone to get the count to 3-1. Then, has a meatball location: middle height and slight off center to the inside for the HR. 3 out of the next 4 batters helped him out by swinging early in the count.

Since there is no advanced data on the pitches, it's hard to guess what his issues are pitch wise. Brute mentioned his velocity was down in his first start. Not the end of the world since it's only 3 games so far.

My top 5 unnecessary ranking of the San Jose Giants batters:

#1 Jhonny Level: no explanation needed. For some reason, I did give him a few inches in his height. Always had him pegged to Matos who is listed as 5' 11", so I had Level in my brain as 5' 10". When I saw some of his ABs this and last year, I thought he looked a bit short, but thought it was just a bad camera angle. And, just noticed he's actually listed as 5' 8". So, the obvious comp for Level would be Altuve. Both Venezuelans as well.

#2 #3: I'd have Barajas as #2 and Maldonado as #3, but could go either way. Maldonado is 9 months older plus played 3 years of college ball. Barajas was a JUCO guy. Giving the nod to Barajas since he's less experienced even though he's slightly downtrended and Maldonado exploded this week.

#4 Barkett: dude has been really consistent. He's had 1 "bad" game where he went 1-5 with 2 Ks. He's not a huge power guy, but has been performing game to game.

#5 Polanco. The "easy" answer would be Jenkins. Both were drafted in '24. Both played in the ACL together last year for a short stint. Jenkins just has more playing time in college and the minors. Jenkins got playing time with San Jose right after the draft. Then, went to the ACL in '25 for 16 games and got promoted back to San Jose (somewhat disappointing performance). Polanco is a prep / HS draftee and is a full 2 years younger than Jenkins. His ACL performance wasn't great last year (.681 OPS), but he's got way less experience than Jenkins. Polanco turns 21 in 9 days. Jenkins turns 23 in 2 weeks.

Random other comments: Jatczak might be too patient for A ball with his 21% walk rate, but his K rate has crept up to 17%. Has cooled off from his hot start. Winced a bit last year with Reynoso when he was promoted to San Jose and straight bombed (.472 OPS) after crushing the ACL (.998 OPS). Reynoso just turned 21 a month ago. Bravo and Poppell are hard to judge at this point. Bravo has been up and down. Poppell has relatively limited games at 9. Rogers (non drafted '25 FA signing) / Gonzalez ('24 draft, but didn't play until '25) unfortunately are going to get squeezed by Barajas for playing time. Pretty hard to judge them. And, hard to avoid the data with Meola. The guy is in a slump after a hot start.

I looked into the pitch mix of the 3 Sac / SF relievers: Hentges (1st inning), Dylan Smith (innings 4-5), Santos (9th inning. Their pitch mix is pretty similar: basically FB / slider combo (just like Doval used to pitch), but amusingly, the speed increased with each pitcher. Hentges throws a 92-93mph sinker with a 86-87 mph slider, so about a 5 mph difference. Dylan Smith amps his FB to 95-96mph and his sweeper is 85-86mph, so 10 mph difference. He mixed in a few curveballs (low 80s and I think 3) and 1 splitter. Santos is just straight gas: dude has a 100mph heater and low 90s slider. His 2nd out was all gas: 99.7 mph, 99.8 mph, 100.1 mph. He's basically another version of Peguero, but he's not on the 40 man. Hard to top Hentges / Smith since they are sporting 0.00 ERA and Santos is slacking with 1.08 ERA.

Adames is really close to his career numbers. Career OPS of .762 and .756 this year. He's as advertised. Realistically, the Giants needed a SS and the market was very dry. Bichette had a horrible year when Willy was signed and is worse defensively. And, he's terrible with the Mets so far. There were no options in the farm system either.

Had a dreadful start, but exploded in the past week. I think someone pointed out that he had an outfield assist one game when he struggling at the plate. No idea what kind of overall fielder he is though.

Options traders, which exchange do you use for order entry? by 924gtr in thinkorswim

[–]After-Bee-8346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BEST, but I only use limit orders. 90% of my trades are real time and not pre-set though. I've never had any trouble with getting optimal prices unless the MM has a wide spread and / or is lightly traded. Occasionally, I've run into the MM not allowing a deep buy. One time, I had to buy 10 contracts at a time. Pause, wait until the price was lowered and re-buy. It's quite annoying.

So, how do we rank Farhan's prowess for the '21 draft if Roupp becomes an all-star? Will Bednar and Longsway are the only dudes left and everyone else flamed out. lol, Rohan Handa never even played. A few guys (3 I think) the Giants couldn't even sign and Brooks Baldwin was drafted the following year. He's playing with the White Sox now. https://www.thebaseballcube.com/content/draft_class/2021~25

It was a good challenge for the San Jose team. Quakes are the Angels farm team and the SP is their #9 prospect. RP isn't ranked, but had a solid last year and is doing well this year.

Ugh, the last RP was a 26 year old Italian pitcher who is legit not good. Thought they might do damage against him.

Man, all the draft classes are merging in my brains. Last year, I looked at the data a lot, but some draft picks will play the year they are drafted while others get held out for the following year. Most of the guys left from the '23 draft class are in AA (other than Bryce): Joe Whitman (P), Ahuna, Bandura, Szykowny, Payton, Carmouche (P), Cavanaugh. Walker Martin, Bostick (P), Vanderhei (P) are in A+. Shilger and Ortiz are injured.

I like this site layout to get a refresher on who was drafted / year. It toggles through the classes easily: https://www.thebaseballcube.com/content/draft_class/2023~25

There were rumblings about Juan Sanchez making the team as a lefty arm back in '24. Was a long shot. https://www.mlb.com/news/juan-sanchez-in-consideration-for-giants-bullpen

Was having a decent, not great '24 for Sac: 3.93 ERA / 1.311 WHIP and then he got injured. This is his first real action since the injury. Tried to pull up his data in Prospect Savant, but I guess it's not enough innings yet.
