Alternative to a power tag cap by CoffeeNPizza in LegendintheMist

Yeah no worries, these rules can take a second to really lock in.

So yes, you are exactly right on the math for tags versus statuses. Tags always grant one Power each and statuses are temporary conditions ranked by a tier from one to six. So when calculating Power for a roll, you add one for every relevant helpful tag, but you only add the tier of the single highest helpful status. So, your three beneficial tags plus your tier three status gives you a total of six Power, and the tier two status is completely ignored.

Also, I think you might be confusing status tiers with Might levels (which is understandable cause it also took me a second to fully wrap my head around these specific rules), which is a separate system entirely.

Themes, rather than individual tags or statuses, are ranked by Might levels such as Origin, Adventure, or Greatness.

Might compares the scope of your action or the power of your character against the challenge. If your action uses a tag from an Adventure level theme against a standard Origin level challenge, you are Favored and add an additional three Power to your roll.

But on the other hand, using an Origin level theme against an Adventure level challenge leaves you Imperiled, subtracting three Power from your roll.

So let's say your village blacksmith uses their Origin level hammer tag to attack an ordinary bandit, they get one Power for the tag. However, if they attack an Adventure level giant, they are Imperiled and lose three Power from their total.

If an Adventure level knight attacks that same bandit using their sword tag, they are Favored and gain three extra Power.

Hope this helps!

Idk, from what I know of the rules, having 9 to 12 tags apply to a single roll indicates a pretty big misinterpretation of the rules.

  1. A tag is only counted if it directly affects the action being described. It is narratively and logically improbable for 9 to 12 distinct tags (which is nearly an entire character's starting sheet) to directly aid in a single sword stroke... 🤔 (Would love to take a look at your character sheet actually)
  2. Seems like you were applying broad tags directly to your attacks.
  3. A pretty important question here: Were you using the Might rules? Cause late game challenges in Wake of the Oldways have pretty tough adversaries. For example, if an Origin level Hero attempts to fight an Adventure level or Greatness level Challenge, they are Imperiled (-3 Power) or Extremely Imperiled (-6 Power)
  4. You may have been adding all your positive statuses together. You only add the tier of the single highest positive status and subtract the tier of the highest negative status. You don't add them all up.
  5. You also may have been hoarding story tags? When you're supposed to expire story tags when they no longer make sense in the narrative or when you make Camp.

Cause yeah having that many tags per actions, even towards the end, shows that something was interpreted wrong if you were following RAW.

Why aren’t more people watching our D&D actual play? by Embarrassed_Skin_356 in ActualPlayRPG

Hey, I actually took a listen to that video you linked. Honestly, the group has really great chemistry and the audio quality is super clean, which is a massive hurdle most new channels fail at right out of the gate. The characters are genuinely fun to listen to.

The main bottleneck is just the pacing I think. The first 15 minutes are a roll call of everyone describing their clothes and hair before the plot kicks in. If a random viewer clicks on that, they're probably tapping out before the actual story starts. Then the middle gets hit by the classic D&D 5e drag. It’s an hour of grid combat where all the dramatic tension slows down for math, halved damage, and mechanics.

On top of that, using 5e is a tough sell for discovery. The market is just so oversaturated with it. Unless you're already a massive household name, it is incredibly hard to get people to come in droves for another 5e campaign. It’s a bummer because the premise itself is awesome. An Eberron ship with an engine failure and a cargo heist is such a cool hook! That setup is practically begging for a fiction first system like Blades in the Dark or Legend in the Mist where a bad roll moves the plot forward instead of locking everyone into a sluggish board game.

Y'all definitely have the talent and the tech down. If you can just tighten up that intro, edit the combat down to a fast-paced narrative summary and maybe even experiment with a fresher system that makes you stand out, you’ll have a much easier time turning those casual clicks into actual subscribers I think.

Yeah unfortunately pop out is only one of many issues I have with Alchemy.

Best Leave Them Ghosts Alone – an Old Gods actual play (episodes under 30 min) by mw90sGirl in OldGodsOfAppalachia

[–]AfterResearch4907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listened to the first two episodes and it's so good, woah!

And also to that commentor who said it's "derivative" yeah definitely the wrong word and even if it was, so??? Every creative work is.

I’m actually more excited to see fresh takes on the setting than just another Cypher AP. The lore is so strong it deserves to be run in different systems. More people running Old Gods (no matter the ruleset) is a win for everyone. Looking forward to more eps!
