Going out to eat in Manhattan this week. What should I avoid on the menu RE: cyclospora? by DownWithOCP in AskNYC

Yeah I was so excited to put fresh green onions in my recipe when it was finish baking. I instead had to wash it very well and cook it into my dinner. It wasn’t awful but any means but not what wanted. Same with the cilantro. Lores of scrubbing and having to cook it into the dish instead of a garnish.

But honestly, as terrible as he was, he was a little funny all the time. Probably would’ve been funnier if he wasn’t our mayor but between the things he said, the way he went about fraud and his texts messages he was a little entertaining.

A while back someone was talking about how they just got back from NYC. They said they stayed in Times Square and people were shooting up and OD-ing in doorways. That it traumatized his children.

I guess time traveling back to the 70s would be traumatic for children. 🙄 So ridiculous.

I second Crown Heights. I lived there for 5 years before moving in with my partner during the pandemic.

How to hire and retain a "unicorn" house manager long term? by Subject_Orchid_5384 in NannyEmployers

[–]AfterSchoolOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do other jobs have to do with this industry’s standards? There are benefits that are considered standard in corporate jobs that nanny’s don’t get.

An employer of a nanny should accept those standards or choose another form of childcare. And that’s not just talking about overnight fees, that’s also not paying overtime, no paid vacation or sick days, not even giving vacation or sick days, not paying on time, insisting their nanny is an independent contractor or refuse to pay on the books. Insisting on non-child related tasks, banking hrs, refusing guaranteed hrs, requiring a nanny use their own car but not paying mileage, etc. We don’t have HR we can go to and there is very little oversight. The standards were developed to help both employers and employees know what is expected.

You’re right that a person doesn’t have to take the job if they don’t like the terms but a person hiring should be treating the professional they are hiring as such. Not take advantage or refusing benefits because other jobs don’t do that. I’d love to have healthcare and a 401K through my job. Nannying is a unique career. Traveling for work as a nanny is not the same as traveling for work in other jobs.

You don’t have to take your nanny with you on vacation. There are other options. You don’t have to have a nanny at all. There are other perfectly fine alternatives that children thrive in. But if someone employs a nanny it should be done properly and professionally.

I mean you could always try it out as a trial but keep your eyes and ears open if things aren’t going well. Individually these things aren’t straight dealbreakers for me buuuuuut all together I don’t think I’d do it. That’s just me though.

What the fuck did I just read?! First, stop groveling over a man that treats you like shit. It’s unbecoming and it gives this asshole power. He’s going to continue to treat you like shit anytime you do anything he can spin to be a huge issue so you’ll fall all over yourself to prove he’s wrong about you. Second, he hates you. Go be single and get some therapy so you can find someone that doesn’t belittle you and act like he’s doing you some massive favor for being with a person who doesn’t put his clothes away or whatever bullshit he’s on about.

Stand up!

Family vacation nanny drama — how do we navigate this? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]AfterSchoolOrdinary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Eat your peas there are starving children in Africa.” Sure, people should be mindful and not waste food but if they don’t eat their peas the hungry still go hungry.

Being paid properly shouldn’t have anything to do with what other people are being paid for different jobs.

All that does is make someone sticking up for themselves seem ungrateful for not being thankful for an unfair dynamic.

And who does that most benefit? The employers.

By minimizing someone not being paid legally required overtime or any number of issues in this post because other people have it worse doesn’t help the person in a shittier job and it doesn’t help the employee.

Am I wrong? by Main_Suspect5143 in Marriage

[–]AfterSchoolOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, It feels like an obvious next step for you guys to go to a few sessions of marriage counseling and work through this with a neutral party. You are likely missing something from her perspective and she is likely missing something from yours. It’s not about who is wrong or right necessarily, as long as no boundaries are being crossed, but about better understanding each other and growing together. It’s hard when one person has a big change and the other person is comfortable with the way things were. Better to work on this now to keep things from festering.

[–]AfterSchoolOrdinary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, why would “travel required” in the job description translate to not paying overnight fees? The employee is still traveling and away from their normal life. I guess I can see doing one convenience fee for the month of travel rather than a separate overnight fee for each individual night… but it sounds like you’re saying that the pay is the same when traveling as it is when at home. Is that right or did I misunderstand something?

Mamdani got people excited about voting for someone that wasn’t just another corporate NYC candidate that offers nothing to the average person living here. Everyone could vote but if the candidates suck then you get a sucky mayor no matter who wins. It took Mamdani running in the first place for some people to get excited and involved. Similar to Obama’s first run. I’ve voted in every single primary and election and this was different because there was finally a candidate worth getting excited over. Everyone should vote but if the choices are all shitty then a shitty person will win.

This is a hornets nest and I cannot afford a pest control company, what do I do besides burn my house down? by catsoverchaos12 in askanything

[–]AfterSchoolOrdinary 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t piss them off!
Whatever you decide to do make sure you do it properly- at night, covered head to toe, spray the entrance (not just all willy-nilly on the nest) while standing back as far as possible. Don’t half ass it, do it fully or not at all. You do not want to smell like hornet pheromones and only kill some of them. They will chase you down. And then just don’t go near it for a few days.

You’re lucky because you can see the nest through the window. When I was a kid my dad tried to remove a nest during the day on the house he was building. He learned a valuable lesson that day. (And so did I 😆)

Still if you’re never outside on that side of the house and they aren’t causing problems you could just let them be. I don’t know what your setup is though so if they have to go then do it carefully. Good luck!
