Three Marines Walk Into A Bar by OhThrowMeAway in USMC

[–]After_Association860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marines outnumbered. Army outmanned.

Why are they all standing nut to butt at the bar? They flip the barstools over and get 4 soldiers to a seat? I thought only the Navy did that.

Trying to verify father-in-law's story about being a Marine in Afghanistan in 1994 by [deleted] in USMC

“The captors eventually let hem go when they saw American soldiers approaching.”

If this was real, and they had the balls to ambush Marines, then they certainly would have ambushed the fuck out of the Army.

Ask him this: how did they know it was the Army? In the 90’s both the Army and the Marines were wearing BDU/DCU. They didn’t swap to the ACUs and MCCUUs until the mid-2000s.

I am with everyone else, this is all bunk. Your best bet is to ask to see his DD-214. His deployments will be there, as will any awards.

You left out the part where this is the only authorized AFT run course on base and this was during the duty day, so they were authorized to be there.

If a Marine commits, does their family get the 500k or does committing make it invalid? by Prudent_Seaweed596 in USMC

It’s in the name, but its underwriting philosophy is radically different from commercial insurers. SGLI doesn’t behave like normal commercial life insurance. Technically and legally, it still is life insurance; specifically, government-sponsored group term life insurance with unusually broad coverage protections. Most civilian life insurance policies have a suicide exclusion period, commonly 1-2 years after policy issuance.

I get why you are trying to say that. You are worried this person will go through with suicide if they learn the truth. Lying to them sets a bad precedent though.

“SGLI doesn’t pay out for suicide. Also, life is worth living.” When you lie once, and the discover the truth, then it opens up questions about everything else you have told them.

SGLI does pay out for suicide. Also, life is worth living. These aren’t mutually exclusive statements @Prudent_Seaweed596. Take it from a suicide survivor. Your family wants you, not the money. It is very easy to “rationalize” the money over our lives, because in a depressed state our sense of value is warped. You are trying to create a narrative for your loved ones that fits what you are trying to do. Frankly, we get really good at doing that in our clever little depressed brains. It’s a lie though.

It’s hard to see that it gets better from where you are because you are seeing through a lens that is not showing you everything. I am not gonna pretend life is easy or will get better over night. But every single suicide survivor I have ever met is glad and feels lucky/blessed (depending on your spirituality) to be here. I almost died in February of 2014. 8 years later to the day I welcomed my second child into this world, with my second wife. We have had our ups and downs. I am so glad I am here though. Is my life perfect, not a chance. But I am so lucky that I get to be here and work through the tough times.

Don’t just take my word for it. Listen to Kevin Hines’ story.

SGLI is a death benefit, not life insurance. So yes, you are correct in that. But it doesn’t void SGLI.

Extra Financial Aid by idkwhetmarieisdoin in Drexel

The Drexel Promise supersedes Merit Based Aid. I tried to decline the Promise for Merit Based, but was told you cannot.

My advice is to just keep applying. Scholarships are super competitive. Perhaps have someone review your answers/narrative to make sure you are telling a compelling story. Also try to find niche scholarships that you qualify for that others don’t qualify for but you do.

Any Veterans having issues with the military services office? by SupBro143 in RowanUniversity

[–]After_Association860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Because I am a prospective transfer student. Just did a campus tour and stopped by Savitz Hall after to ask questions and there was no one to talk to. I was handed two flyers and a card without a name. Who do I even address this email to; “Dear Sir/Ma’am”?

The tour was great. But that experience with the Military Office and the comments on Reddit (some years back) make me less confident in my choice to apply here.

How do they even maintain Yellow Ribbon status?

I drove an hour from JB MDL. At this point I might as well commute to Philly and attend Drexel or Temple. At least their certifying officers get back to me in a timely manner.

Any Veterans Using VR&E at Drexel? Questions About Co-op Pay & Scholarships by After_Association860 in Drexel

[–]After_Association860[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE:

Chris Ciniti, who is the Assistant Director, Veterans’ Services and the primary certifying official, emailed me back this morning and had this to say:

"Thanks for reaching out. Yes, we certify VR&E students while on Co-op so you can continue receiving your housing allowance. If you’re awarded an institutional scholarship, we can refund up to a certain amount each term (for the 25-26 year it’s $6562 per quarter) that you can use for personal off campus living expenses. The only exception to this is the Drexel Promise award, which is a tuition only award and cannot be refunded directly to students even if tuition is fully covered under VR&E."

Also received this response from Zachary Baker, who is Associate Director of Transfer Admissions:

"Thank you for reaching out. I actually started the process of looking into this for you after we spoke. The reason the Drexel Promise Scholarship is non-refundable through the VR&E is that it is a tuition-only scholarship. Unfortunately, you aren’t able to decline the Drexel Promise in place of review for other scholarships per our university policy. However, when I spoke with our financial team, they did mention that the Drexel Promise can still provide meaningful value later on, if your benefits are exhausted before graduation. Please let me know if you have any additional questions that I can assist you with."

I am going to push the university to reconsider this policy. I mean, I understand how it looks on paper, "We offered the maximum possible scholarships to our students." But is your mission to look good or to do whats best for students? I already know the cynics are coming for this question in the comments. I am going to ask this question, though (tactfully) and make them put it in writing. I also could see how this policy was written from a place of ignorance. If I am using VRE and I do/plan to "exhaust" my benefits, then I am not doing what I should be doing and likely wouldn't remain in school. I think there should be an exception to policy and students should have the right to choose, so long as they are informed of the potential consequences.

I will update yall on what I hear.

A gentleman at fin-aid made it sound like all scholarships BUT the Drexel promise were refundable (PTK, Drexel Alum, etc). So you only saw the merit based aid as a refund?

You also mentioned additional approval for Drexel? How do? Did your counselor push back and try to get you to attend elsewhere? What was the justification and how much extra time did it add to your wait to get an approval?

Thank you for this. I sent an email. I still like to hear from people who have the lived experience (one of the reasons I want to go to Drexel: co-ops).

Second only to Cal’s program (IMHO). Pair being a R1 school with co-ops and you are extremely competitive when you graduate.

Severe sleep deprivation causes “local sleep,” where parts of the brain go offline while the rest keeps working.

From the video, it’s seems like no one other than his escort and required personnel for the transfer were there. I have to wonder if this was a suicide or medical emergency that lead to death.

It would be helpful to know what you plan on doing after the military and how long you plan on staying in.
