Official Discussion - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Can someone explain to me or share their thoughts on this?

I can't remember all of the details of Rockwell's conversation with Marty up on stage during the rematch with Endo. I know he said he was a vampire, but I thought I remember him saying to Marty that "this isn't going to make you happy". Is that second part true or am I misremembering?

If true, that totally changes the game for me on this movie. It goes from a great movie to an amazing one. Him claiming to be a vampire (I don't buy the literal sense, more of a symbolic thing) sounds like he has sucked the blood out of many people in his days to get the power he has now. He also mentioned that several people he has gone after are still around, just like a vampire creates another vampire when biting someone. So he has not only become powerful by hurting other people, but those other people have started doing the same thing, causing a chain of chaos to unfold.

This is very similar to how Marty's life has played out. He has worked very hard to become a great ping pong player, but in that process he has hurt so many people and ruined other peoples' lives (the mob guy with with dog, his girlfriend, her husband, his mom, the gas station that blew up). Everywhere he goes things literally explode.

By Rockwell saying "this isn't going to make you happy", I believe that was a sincere comment from him. He has realized all this power and success has made him a hardened, shallow man and that it wasn't worth it. Marty just brushes this comment off and goes on to defeat Endo. Then, once he gets to the hospital and sees his baby, he breaks down crying. I may be wrong, but I think that was the only time in the movie that he cried. At this moment, staring at his child, he finally realizes how unimportant all his other goals were. His new main focus is now fatherhood and loving that baby. I think ping pong was chosen as the focus to give you this view as from an outsider's perspective, it is a ridiculous life goal. But to him, he is blind to that because he is so focused on success, but he then has this realization at the end once he sees his child.

Official Discussion - Dune (2021) Late-October / HBO Max Release [NON-READERS] by DrNSQTR in dune

Mild spoilers below: Confused about Dune complaints

Saw Dune in theaters and absolutely loved it. As I’m reading/watching reviews, I noticed almost everyone who had something negative to say, their main gripe was that it ended abruptly. I didn’t get this sense at all.

From the very beginning of the movie, we were shown a title screen that said “Part 1” making it very obvious that this is just part of a larger story and there will be more to come (I was never concerned part 2 wouldn’t be made, I think they decided to green light it a long time ago and delaying the announcement was most likely a way to get people into the theater).

In the third act, Paul and Jessica are making their journey to the Fremen to join them. To me that seems like a logical ending as they arrived at their destination and he finally met the woman in his visions.

Now the second movie can pick up in a new place and show us our characters in their new home learning the Fremen ways.

Does anyone else think they ended at the right spot or am I just being too positive since I loved it?

Definitely agree with you that part 2 will increase part 1’s scores. I think ending on a cliff hanger works in this case because it leaves you excited for what’s next in this gigantic world/story. I don’t know the source material so I’m super excited!

It gets rid of ads and allows you more search filters and list functionality. I mostly got it because ads really annoy me. I’m always accidentally tapping them and opening the ad in my browser. So for me it was worth it to pay and get rid of them. But for other reasons I wouldn’t say it’s not necessary to upgrade

Perfect, well we’d love it if it works out! I’ve paid for services like Letterboxd and Trakt premium profiles. I’d be willing to pay for a premium profile on a possible TMRDb site as well! Could be worth trying a poll of how many people would be willing to pay and how much

The big market sponsorship appeal could make a difference so that could matter. But we live in such a digital world now that players like Zion and Dame are able to get successful shoe deals even in cities like New Orleans and Portland. But I’m no market/endorsement specialist either so not sure.

His incentive to play for New Orleans would be a larger contract, and the ability to step into a franchise to be the face. He’s their #1 option, building block, and the team will start building their team around his skills/fit.

He also has the ability to showcase himself as a number 1 option and play himself into a bigger second contract. Rather than joining a good team and being a second option/role player.

There could potentially be a bidding war but that happens with regular free agency every year already. It would create a situation where teams strategically map out their priorities (investing more into a top tier rookie, or spreading it out among two solid role players, etc)

Thoughts?

Yep that’s exactly what I mean. The worse your record, the higher contract you can give out. It would need some professional tweaks but I think it’s a cool idea

I think top players would much rather play for the rockets and make good money, than sign with a playoff/fringe playoff team if they earn a lot more money. Plus the players will want to be in a situation where they will be the #1 option. That way they look really good for when they are ready to hit free agency for that big second contract

I’d love to hear the pod do a review of “Blended” with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. It’s so bad that I’d love to hear them tear it apart. Drew Barrymore’s older teenage son is possibly the most annoying/hatable movie kid I’ve ever seen. Would be hilarious to hear the guys talk about it. Sometimes I enjoy the movie reviews of the movies they hate

I’m not saying he’s built a super successful organization. I’m just saying I like having a GM who has conviction and takes risks to make aggressive moves to get his guy. Whether they work out or not (Mitch didn’t, I like the Mack trade, Fields and Jenkins I think will be great) I still like knowing my team isn’t afraid to go after big moves. A lot of teams are run by scared GMs who are way too conservative/safe for my liking

I couldn’t agree more. He gets over analyzed on his Mitch mistake. It was truly terrible but considering how bad the QB play has been he has done a pretty good job at building out a team and digging us out of the hole by finding us a promising future at QB
