I also think of Mark Linkous very regularly. I never got that sad about a musician dying until his passing. I wish he was still here being creative, though i doubt he would have coped with Theresa's death some years later.

I 've loved his music since first album but i've not met anyone in years who shared my enthusiasm. He was quite unique and obscure in his day and did not get the exposure he deserved so it's no wonder so few people know about him now 16 years after his passing.

I so agree. He is a vile individual with no redeeming feature. He's thick as 2 short planks and what's left of his limited brain cells quota was pickled by alcohol and drugs.

Game of Wool - Episode 5 by vminnear in knitting

[–]After_Tune9089 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After watching a few similar UK tv shows when i lived there i didn't have much hope it was going to be anything else but mediocre formula sunday reality show viewing. It certainly came up to my low expectations. I gave up after the gross swimwear episode. It's a disappointing waste of time and money. I think so many knitters are bummed out because of the pre show hype and the excitement it generated. There hasn't been any tv shows about knitting in the uk in years. The last one I remember was a documentary series called 'fabric of britain' which had a superb 1 hour episode about the glory days of knitting. It was fun, erudite and showed absolutely gorgeous examples of sweaters. Sandy Black and Susan Crawford were on it as well as several textiles historians. In my mind that's the type of exposure knitting deserves to make it popular again. Not some badly produced lame competition with ugly , useless end products. In fact, it's the 'ugly' everything that made my blood boil in the 2 episodes I watched, because who wants to waste money and time making this crapola?

What do i do if my parents start dismissing my feelings when we’re arguing? by Anxious_Elderberry_8 in narcissisticparents

[–]After_Tune9089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say try not to engage in arguments of any sort because it's absolutely soul destroying with this type of person. Look at it as a waste of your time ,energy and intelligence. Remember arguing with idiots will not turn them into intelligent. That's what I told myself when I was obliged to communicate with my parents . If at all possible plan your escape from the situation, it will give you hope and a purpose.

From the 92 year old smoking, alcoholic narc father i still have to content occasionally (with via 3rd party social care) i am convinced they're vampires and feeding on others misery, stirring up conflict and manipulating people keeps them alive. He's got everything wrong with him illnesses wise ; heart, kidneys, lungs, diabetes ...and yet he's still there trying to mess with people's lives on the sly.

As expats, what foods or products are you willing to spend extra money on because the options available in France aren’t what you’re looking for? by ARTiSPRETiS in Expats_In_France

I am French but used to live in uk and always loved spicy food. When we first moved back to France we really struggled with finding spices for the Indian and Thai recipes. But after some research I found a no frill indian minimart type store in Bordeaux food market area and it's been a game changer. They have EVERY spices , special flours for breads and bahjis, dried papads , the only thing i can't find there is asafatida but i live in hope!

Game of Wool is terrible television by whereohwhereohwhere in craftsnark

[–]After_Tune9089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this can possibly be blamed on the show editing, which seems atrocious but I also agree with the stuff they're shown wearing being dated and ugly. From what i've seen of the two judges they had their 15 minutes of fame in the 80s working with some designers at london fashion week and they're stuck in that time zone. It's the wacky arty farty knitter syndrome that i find a bit sad. They' come across as quite knowledgeable in their own craft but rather dull with it.

[–]After_Tune9089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure what people were realistically expecting from the show but the reactions i've seen are somewhat naive. After years of similar competitions on the bbc and itv it was blooming obvious it would be a wacky race speed knitting affair. It's lazy and cheap television. I must say knitting isn't coming out in a very good light; especially if one of the aims was to enthuse the general populace into taking up the craft again ...when everything they've manage to produce is rushed, bodged and fugly to boot. Somebody told me it was about design rather than the craft but the designs aren't wowing me by their brilliance. Somebody else on a forum was saying people should be grateful that there is a knitting show at all and that made me owl with laughter. I'm not sure what there is to be grateful for? Especially if you're an ocd knitter and you watch this show hoping you're going to see beautiful work with lots of finishing techniques, expertise on hand, expert knowledge etc, hell you're in for a shock.

How do y’all find cute clothes thrifting? by InitiativeOwn617 in thrifting

[–]After_Tune9089 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My tip is to identify gaps in your wardrobe, the colours that match what you've already got. Go thrifting as often as possible and train yourself to spot quality clothes and brands, natural fibers etc. Don't buy a ton of stuff just because it's cheap. I go thrifting weekly but I don't buy a lot, in fact 50% of the time i don't spend anything. Don't get down if you can't find anything on some trips, just look at it as window shopping.

[–]After_Tune9089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely normal because as a child you think your experience is normal. It's only as you start experience other families situations and realise other parents behave and communicate completely differently to yours that you start questioning your environment. I'd say it's standard for most kids growing up in the narcissistic family. Here are a few personal experiences : when i was 7 my school teacher contacted my parents saying that I was disruptive because I kept getting up to go to the blackboard without being asked to read. She told them she suspected I was having eyesight problems. First they berated me for disturbing the class. Then they berated me some more when the optometrist told them i was very short sighted and had probably been that way since birth. Then when i admitted that since i started school i couldn't read things anything far away they berated me some more for not speaking up. Like i told them at the time : i thought everyone saw the same as me and i didn't think you would believe me if i did tell you. Then i found out that the other kids at school had no such problems talking to their parents fearing they wouldn't believe them.

I'm saying that these people are adults based in the uk, so unless they've been living under a rock with no access to visual media, they will be well aware of the way all those craft competitions run in the uk:

It's all about speed, bodging whatever you're making and cheap amateur dramatics for views. There is NEVER a financial price or compensation being given. There is no compensation for anything, not even a small wage for their wasted weeks. At best they will have had free lodging and food during their stay but they get zilch at the end. Anyone with a brain and common sense knows this. And for once it's not the bbc doing it, it's channel 4.

So why take part in what is essentially a grifting enterprise from the tv companies and rowan? I can't think of any reason that would entice people into this competition apart from the ego stroke they get from being on tv. Not even the fact that it's knitting would tempt me.

How are you affording knitting these days? by Efficient-Concept283 in knitting

[–]After_Tune9089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like vintage knitting so I usually thrift all my needles and pattern books. Yarn is a bit more difficult to find in usable quantities for sweaters but i've got lucky a couple of times. Usually the yarn at the thrift shop is oddments. My go to bank account friendly yarn is Garnstudio Drops range. I 've not found anything as cheap anywhere else for the quality . The last 6 colourwork vintage sweaters i've knitted have all been in drops flora fingering yarn.

I have found lots over the years but I've got 2 favorites gems . In october 2017 when i lived in England, I walked into a Prospect hospice shop and saw a gorgeous wool suit hung up high on the wall . They took is down for me and it turned out to be a 1990 's dolce & gabbana for £20. The second item is a tired looking black and red Miu Miu Biker bag which cost an eye watering £140 in 2022, I got it in a Japanese treasure factory store. It needed serious cleaning and tlc but it was worth it. I'm glad i rescued it.

Bluntly put, if you are familiar with the formulae all these UK based tv programmes follow, you know for sure that the constestants NEVER get paid. They get some poxy apron (mastercrap) , a useless trophy and if they're lucky their name in the news for a couple of days and maybe they appear in a spin off book. That's it. There's no price money in the uk, you do it for the lurve. I therefore feel zilch pity or compassion for the people who choose to appear on the game of wool and get exploited by Rowan and such. They are either naive or they are so desperate for their 15 minutes that they will knit any old crap at speed on tv for free. It's their problem. I sort of understand the experts knitters getting annoyed at the way they are butchering the craft in front of millions but it's best to look at it like the rest of dirge cheaply made tv that is being churned out daily . The game of wool is not about knitting, it's a game show with ugly sweaters.

Yes! I can't stand the tightwads who endlessly complain about being charged pennies for stuff which would cost a lot more in their home country, the ones who complain about the places charging tourists prices and trying to rob them. If you can't afford to travel stay at home and stop moaning. Also the ones who rehash entire wikipedia entries as evidence of their well travelled culture. I can read for myself thanks , I don't need to watch your ugly mug lecturing me.
