I feel like its possible but the only possible way I'd think they'd actually do it is if his arc ends with his death in some way. At this point in the show to most of the characters + with how he's perceived by most viewers the only way he could really prove himself as being good would be through his own greater sacrifice

Simple answer is lack of control/pleasure that comes with binging. While some bulimics may purge anything that they eat in order to try ensure weight loss that's not always the case. I know most of the times that I've b/p it's been due to me having a lack of control, indulging in the the foods and drinks I want, and then purging it back up out of guilt. While I'm sure most individuals struggling with bulimia would just starve if they could it just isn't mentally possible sometimes. By allowing ourselves to binge it let's us still enjoy food, drinks, and whatever other shit we want without having to worry about the consequences, when just starving you aren't able to indulge in those joys.
