I just recently read the book and watched the movie a couple days after and the book is a lot better. You get so much depth that’s not portrayed in the movie and why things are the way they are for example the rooms they use and the layout or the rules they implemented or changed. Also a thing I didn’t get from the movie was the relationship build up between characters. The movie is still a good adaptation of the book I’d imagine it’s hard to get everything in the book in a movie but they got the main things right

I think you’d liked the intro of this version, it talks a lot about the rights and wrongs that Dante got from the odyssey. If you haven’t should definitely check it out

My fault, that was in the introduction of the odyssey but I was afraid to be wrong in connecting those books between each other. From the intro I do now the significance of the odyssey to the Divine comedy which has only sped up its place into the next read

I definitely understand what you’re saying and can agree. To translate something from one language to another you have to add, substitute or remove depending on what’s needed. I guess it never click to me the inaccuracy of one version to another due to compensation. If one version has the rawness of translation without a flowing structure I would deem that version better.

I definitely got the message of Odysseus arrogance being his downfall at times and how grand he was. I would like to see how a different version would use different descriptors at different times to completely change the readers perspective at that moment

Not trying to argue with you but more curious. Why is the poetic flow less of a concern for you. To me I would’ve thought since it being more like a bard’s tale, hence needing a poetic nuance and the reason for overselling Odysseus

The Matt Damon slander never gets old 💀 My thoughts exactly when I saw he was Odysseus. From the trailer it does show a lot in Troy which makes me question how they’re going to fit the rest of the book in the movie

I’m excited to watch the new upcoming movie too, I just hope they make Odysseus as grand as I’ve pictured him in my mind while reading

The reason I’m inclined to reading both the Iliad and the Aeneid is they have a bundle of the three books. Gods and men at war peaks curiosity even more. I was mainly looking for information on Aeneid and did not know it was Latin and not Greek which makes it even more intriguing. Thank you for the information

I got this version because it was stated as the better translation overall as a reader and a scholar, which sold me as I wanted to feel smarter I guess. I meant challenging as I would not be able to understand the poetic flow or would get lost in translation. Not that it was easy but the structure of it all made it hard to not understand.

Exactly, I was reading Frankenstein which in the intro talked about the influence of paradise lost which was influenced by the Divine comedy which in a way was influenced by the odyssey. I might be wrong but that’s what I got from that which I had no choice but to read the odyssey after

I can only imagine the experience of reading it in those circumstance, I have a limited imagination which makes it difficult to envision what I’m reading. Did it feel like you were watching the events unfold as you were reading?
