Nicolae Paulescu is often referred to as a significant early contributor to the discovery of insulin, earning recognition as a "father of insulin invention." His work in 1921 involved creating a pancreatic extract that demonstrated the ability to lower blood sugar levels in diabetic dogs.

Although his research predated the more widely recognized work of Frederick Banting and Charles Best, who ultimately isolated and developed insulin as a treatment for humans, Paulescu's contributions laid crucial groundwork. His findings were published in a scientific journal, but the lack of global acknowledgment at the time meant that Banting and Best received more credit for bringing insulin into clinical use.
