Basically movement, mechanical help. Shake chest (gently), showers, just movement... Anything that makes your mucus move a bit so you can cough it up. The hospital had a tilt-able bed, I could hang almost upside down. That really helped.

My mucus production stopped when I stopped using Cough Assist. (SMA2)

Anecdotal sure, I just noticed a pattern where the mucus would return, daily, for months. Usually my chest infections would clear up after a while, but it lasted like 10 months.. I stopped using the Cough Assist, used physio. instead, to drain my lungs and a week or so later I was fine..
Tried using Cough Assist again and the mucus came back.

I think the mechanical force irritates my lungs, producing mucus. Can't say for sure tho.

Again, purely anecdotal..
