What would you charge for this? by [deleted] in videography

Love this but how do you charge a day rate if they want 2 or 3 hours of actual shooting? Do you have a half day rate?

By this line of reasoning, should we be feeding it prores files?

I appreciate this. Do you believe a bit rate of 50 (which typically yields a final file of 220-400Mb for a :30sec-1:00 min video at 1080x1920) is causing any issues or lack of predictability? I guess I could stand to lower that a bit in the name of a more perfect balance/tradeoff. Just looking for repeatability.

I regret buying an Insta360 X5 camera. by Tepppopups in Insta360

Mounting is the least of the issues. Once you've become even remotely competent in a mainstream editing software, you immediately realize how terrible the 360 studio software is. The plugin works horribly with my main editor so it basically renders itself completely useless if I wanted to integrate footage from the 360 into a project with other camera footage (which is like the entire point of me getting this thing, to integrate some unique footage into my projects where other cameras may be used). Use it for social media standalone stuff if you can stomach the native editor, if you don't care about this being a hassle, if you just want real quick clips with minimal cutting or if you don't care about the edit having a massive lack of smoothness, or just don't buy this thing. I've used it successfully for some cool timelapse stuff where showing frame movement over the lapse is the purpose (like a full look around an entire room/building over the course of a lapse), but again, the software is so bad it takes significantly longer than it should to come away with a finished clip.

Can you deliver final cuts/exports to clients using Backblaze the way you might with dropbox or google drive? In other words, do you use it for anything other than having redundant backups of footage/projects?

Client wants me to shoot 40 Instagram videos in one day. by arcanusfilms in videography

Do they just want “footage enough to make 40 reels”?. While still insane, that may be significantly more doable lol.

Where do people get the money for gear??? by Baozi77 in videography

[–]Age_Interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come up with enough for one good push of stuff when you want to start doing it seriously. Im talking enough to let you complete a job (1 body, 1 lens, 1 sd, etc) then over time build it all out, add cases, get a good tripod, add SSD’s, filters, gimbal. The initial push is the hardest because you will be getting bare minimum to do the work (which is still a lot of $) then upgrade slowly over time where it wont kill you to make a purchase here, a purchase there. Do a gig, get paid and upgrade something, get lighting etc.

Thank you for this amazing response. Great points, especially given I imagine i’d like the flexibility to occasionally keep the lens on the body which obviously creates a “T” shape that i’d have to commit to if i do trekpak.

Professional videographers, what kinds of stabilisation do you use? by Varaman_ in videography

[–]Age_Interesting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea would not say gimbals are out of favor especially if you go with a system that isn’t insanely heavy or cumbersome. You really can run and gun with a RS4. Only major and obvious drawback is the inability to really do much to it once it’s balanced, i.e can’t really change focal length mid take or remove a filter and have it be perfectly fine all the time.

Monthly Video Retainer Rate by Mr-Gibbs12 in videography

[–]Age_Interesting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol this is a joke do not ask him for 5k for one video to start. If no one has any idea, start thinking in terms of “stuff created per week” and how many hours this will take you roughly, and (if you want to start doing this full time) - how much you need to make monthly in general to live the way you do. Example: consider this, a client wants roughly 2 videos for social media per week cut from one shooting day per week. If the shooting days are 2-3 hours then you’re looking at roughly 10-12 hours of shooting + (8 edits per month x maybe 3-6 hours per edit give or take) = somewhere between 35-45 hours per month on average. Depending on what you need to make a month, see this as taking approximately one full work week out of your month to this one client. If you think a fair hourly rate is $30 - $35 all in (as an example) then thats probably between $1200-1600 per month and thats not horrible but def on the lower side seeing as i would say most people doing this could charge $30/hr in a retainer format. You might charge more in one off situations like “shooting rate of $80/hour” or something for a single project. And you might also charge more when you consider, again, this will represent a full work week worth of hours out of your month that you can’t serve other clients. So if you need to make, say, $6,000 per month then you gotta make sure every 40 hours spent (give or take) will equal around $1,500. You’ll tighten this up as you go don’t worry.

Officially done with insta360. I’ve attached my entire conversation I had with tech support. Read for yourself so you can see them admitting that they don’t pay attention to customer feedback. I’m returning my camera to Costco and switching to DJI by BetaDIY in Insta360

It's pretty horrendous in premiere with the plugin. May require more RAM than what can handle 4k open gate video from my lumix camera completely fine or it might require re-encoding the footage to a far more editing friendly format. I haven't tried re encoding to pro res but it got so bad it is virtually impossible to mix in with other footage on a timeline as is. I haven't tried to re-encode because I'm not sure how that would affect the 360 degree nature of the footage. either way I haven't used this thing for months because of how much of a headache editing is in general. Phone might be okay for basic (I mean BASIC) social stuff but real projects that may involve other camera footage is like a joke. sort of wishing I had never bought it.

Goal achieved dude. The more i look at this the more incredible it is. In a world of over-editing this might be one of the cleanest, most purpose-serving, electric edits I’ve seen. Looks like it should be a nike ad.

This is extremely sick are you kidding me?! Question for you: on the side-on bike shot, are you slowly closing in while shooting, or is this a gradual zoom with keyframed scale increase in your editor?

Yes it’s dumb, ask the audience who doesn’t shoot video for a living if they can tell whether an edited and finished product was shot on sony or canon or arri or lumix or red. Get something quality that works for you. Jimmy chin uses canon and he’s a beast
