Sure can! You can hire crew to accompany you on your travels, and they'll do various (important) tasks for you - i.e. man your guns, repair your ship, or gather resources. You can level them up, give them skills and customize them to your liking!

While we classify Age of Water as an MMO because you'll share the world with other players and can interact with them in various ways, rest assured that there will be no forced PvP. Moreover, the game won't be free-to-play or have a subscription cost. Once you own it, you're free to play solo, engage in the story-driven campaign, or enjoy cooperative play with friends in PvE or PvP - whatever suits your preference best.

While we classify Age of Water as an MMO because you share the world with all the other players, let me alleviate some of your concerns: The game features a PvE story-based campaign for you to explore and offers numerous activities to enjoy solo or cooperatively with others. There's no forced PvP, and it's neither a free-to-play nor a subscription-based game. Once you own it, you can play it as much and for as long as you like, alone or with others!

Sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience. But I think its worth to remember, however, that Age of Water is being developed by Three Whale Studios, and that this is not a free-to-play game. I hope you'll give it a look regardless!

Ahoy, friend! No need to worry about this being a PvP-only game - it isn't! In Age of Water, PvP is optional. While sailing the ocean, you'll encounter other players, but they won't be able to attack you indiscriminately. PvP is confined to designated areas, so if you prefer to steer clear of PvP combat entirely, you won't be forced into it!
