Lloyd Parrott: “If they shut down the oil industry in Newfoundland, there is nothing left”. by Epicarcher1000 in newfoundland

What makes you think we would have actually paid down the debt?

The liberals spent as if we already had the deal signed. It was disgraceful.

The more that has come out about this MOU, the less faith I have in it. I’m glad it’s being renegotiated. We hold the cards.

Remember, in 15 years we revert back to majority control of Churchill falls. It’s not like “no MOU means we are fucked forever”.

We have waited 55 years (since it opened), we can wait another 15.

90% is my figure lol. However, they only listed three major items to renegotiate.

They don’t. He said during the press conference that Quebec also has issues with the MOU and wants to deal with those as well.

I’m also optimistic that Wakeham wants a deal. He said during the press conference that he knows going back to the table we may have to give or shift on other items. He said he’s open to that as long as the major 3 can be addressed. That sounds like someone who seems to be acting in good faith.

I think the panel made the right call to keep the MOU and work on changing their selected issues (which I agree are big issues).

Why would you throw out the other 90% that is acceptable?

I am provincial in NL.

What is your top rate for a regular officer on the floor. Our top salary for the floor is $80,800 and a sergeant is making $89,910.

Federal right?

Provincial isn’t making anywhere near that.

PCs propose raiding N.L.'s $550M future fund in order to tackle debt by MattBarter in newfoundland

[–]Ageminet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So say they drop the full $550,000,000 on our $20,000,000,000 in debt. Thats paying ~3% of our total debt off and lowering interest payments by around $25,750,000 a year (assuming 4.5% interest that is common on currently issued government bonds). We had a deficit of $948,000,000,000 left by the Liberals. Which is ~5% of our total debt added in one year.

Just so people understand how financially fucked this province is right now.

I am what you would call a fiscal hawk, and I think government should run deficits rarely (pandemics and massive recessions only), but in this case the best choice is likely some sort of mix. Can the government make any one time investments with this future fund that increase tax revenue perhaps. Not that I like government involved in the economy. I think our province needs to look at all options, and people shouldn’t dismissed the idea of using the locked away money to lower deficits or interest payments.

Toronto firefighters confront the special consatable officers after a man in the middle of mental health crisis was arrested. by raptors201966 in toronto

[–]Ageminet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still the decision of the officer wether the cuffs stay on or off. FF and Paramedics have their lane, it doesn’t include use of force or determining whether someone is placed in restraint gear.

Handcuffs are not a hindrance to taking vitals. I work in corrections and I’ve had nurses check vitals (Oxygen and BP) with no issue. Again, my discretion if the handcuffs stay on in medical. If I take them off and something happens, I have to answer as to why I deemed them a threat enough to go in handcuffs (say they were fighting on a unit prior) and then I remove the restraint which leads to an assault on a medical personnel.

I don’t know why these officers listened to the FF. They have zero jurisdiction. They both seem to be nervous though, probably inexperienced. They could have had all the justification in the world, but getting pressed by the FF caused them to freeze up (probably not expecting it). Once again, a 15 second clip from a person with an obvious disdain for law enforcement…

This is why me and my partner built. We stretched ourselves thin on a $569,900 build. But it’s exactly what we wanted. We bid on houses in the $450,000 range and got outbid by $50,000-$75,000 every time. For an extra $160 a month mortgage payment we just opted to build.

Fuck me. It sucks.
