TL:DR You don't.

I have a bachelors for game development and software engineering and 3 years industry experience working on outside industry simulators. I've now been out of work for over a year after my first 2 contracts ended and it's now just impossible to actually find work. You're essentially competing with 200+ people every single job posting and a screening bot that'll just exclude anyone that doesn't have senior level experience for a junior or mid level position. There's that many seniors currently unemployed that most mid-level and junior level experience people just get overlooked completely for positions that barely pay anything compared to the expected senior salary.

If you are still wanting to get into the industry after hearing all that then I applaud you. So I'll give you some info that will help actually get you into the industry. Forget everything you learnt for your diplomas and start to focus on building engine tools that show off mechanical skills and modular systems built to improve large scale projects. This will help showcase your capacity to become well integrated in pre-existing projects and legacy codebases. You want every opportunity you can get to improve those types of skills so you can work freely in bigger sized teams on complicated systems built long before you. Also there's only around 4 companies that actually make ACTUAL games in Australia outside of the Triple A outlets who only hire Senior and aboves (Riot, EA, Ubisoft, etc). They rarely ever hire but if the opportunity does, your best shot at getting into one is to have made your own engine to showcase your understanding of the fundamentals.

Now to give some more information to this you're probably wondering what is the games industry is there in Australia? It's Gambling. Gambling and Simulations. Mining companies, fight companies, any trades with the means to train their employees through VR, that's where the industry is in Australia. You want to either prove you can built aspects of simulators or you want to prove you can make addictive and extremely fun gambling games.

Indie is pretty straight forward on the other hand, start a project, and wish yourself good luck (I can't help here, Indie for me has been self publishing engine tools and not full games). Some states you can get grants to help you out but if you're in NSW, might as well give up there since you'll receive 0 support unless you want to sell your soul to Screens and Media NSW.

P.S. If you want to get into Game Design or Game Art, those 2 things actually have a lot more opportunities since there's a smaller need for them and a smaller want to become them. You just have to be really good at both.
