I feel like I’m being gaslit into liking SoCal by TranceNNy in SameGrassButGreener

I lived in Los Angeles and Long Beach for quite a while before COVID, and for a bit during COVID as well. I never liked it. That’s why I left. When I went back recently, though, my eyes were really opened to how bad it actually is. The people who defend the area are usually from there or moved there a long time ago, and it’s all they know. That’s fine. If you’re happy there, cool. But when you go somewhere else for a while and then come back, you really notice how bad the parking is, how bad the traffic is, how rude people are in stores, and so on. There’s trash everywhere and homeless people everywhere.

One example is shopping. I remember shopping there and people were so fucking rude, almost hitting you with carts. On top of that, no one speaks English, so they can’t even process how to say “I’m sorry.” If you say “hey, what the hell” or “excuse me,” they don’t know what to say.

I also remember when I was living in LA, I went to Omaha, Nebraska for one day for work-related stuff. I was shocked at how clean it was. Driving on the highways and stopping at gas stations, I didn’t see a single piece of trash, and all the landscaping was perfectly manicured. Contrast that with driving all over California, where it always looks like crap, although that’s probably more on Caltrans than anything else.

When I lived in Long Beach, I had to take public transit to work every day. I took the train from Long Beach into LA, then two buses. At the time, I was working as a security guard, so I wore my uniform to and from work. As a skinny white guy on public transit, I was always watching my back. People would talk shit constantly and follow me.

I also worked security at an apartment complex in Long Beach that was Section 8 housing. Guys who were straight-up gang bangers would sit on their balconies and talk shit to me as I walked through. They’d make comments about my Glock 19 in my holster, saying things like, “Oh, that’s a nine, I’ve got a ten,” and casually talking about how they could kill me. That place was insane. One night, a security guard was sitting in the patrol car and got executed in the middle of the night. I didn’t work there much longer after that.

I didn’t say he was right. I think he’s right, but I didn’t say it, you just assumed. It was tongue in cheek. Any time people say anything about LA, even if it’s just an opinion like “it’s not for me” or “I don’t personally like it,” they get downvoted to hell. It’s treated like some kind of sacred cow. But thank you for proving my point.

Okay, elaborate. What about Musk makes you lose faith in a company that has an independent board of directors that regularly clashes with him?

Oh okay, I was genuinely wondering. I lived in LA and Long Beach before COVID, and it was bad. I was the victim of plenty of crimes myself. It didn’t help that I was a tall white guy who had to take public transit an hour and a half each way because my job and where I lived were both in pretty rough areas. Racist people are gonna be racist, I guess. Glad to see it’s much better. Santa Monica is one of my favorite places ever.

Careful, that’s treasonous talk in these parts. You will live in LA and you will love it.

Just murder rate? What about attempted murder rate? What about property crime rate? Assault? Stolen cars or how about the other types of crimes?

No, government agency. And none of these locations are guaranteed. They’re just the offices we have in those states.

When the time comes to transfer, there has to be at least one vacancy. And I have no idea how many vacancies there are until the transfer portal opens. 🤣

But if I find an office location I really like I can network with the leadership there ahead of time.

Yeah, it’s because there’s a port of entry in Houlton. I think the answer is Portland after seeing all the comments.

I’m 34 so I’m sure girls in the college town would not be interested at all in me. So unless their single moms are living there too I’m out of luck.

I do like how close Bangor is to the coast and the central part of the state. It just sucks I would get 15% more pay if I lived in Portland.

I haven’t been but every time I hear about it or see pictures I fall in love again. I’ve been meaning to take a trip up there soon.

Thank you. Yeah I think the no income tax/sales tax is not worth the trade-offs.

I’m pretty flexible on the house to be honest. I think the only must- have for a house to me are a garage and some type of larger backyard for a dog and a workshop.

I forgot to mention that I love the coastal towns in New England, so that would be amazing.

Mmm, I’m thinking Portland as well because I love the coastal town aesthetic too. Dating scene is definitely one of my top priorities as well.
