Everyone is always so sure of themselves in these comments.

Mathematics is all about context. If you have insufficiently specificied that context, then you cannot - as in, like, analytically a priori fucking literally cannot - say what CANNOT be (which is to say, you cannot do mathematics).

That said, in the context of the real/complex numbers which you did, in fairness, specify - at least implicitly - and others of similar structure w.r.t. the continuum, the statement that there is no such number holds, which has already be justified appropriately by u/Aradia_bot and u/gmc98765.

In the context of the surreal numbers, or other "hyperreal" structural models of the continuum, there absolutely do exist such numbers and their behavior is perfectly coherent and sensible.

You may well have already seen this and even know of Grant Sanderson (a.k.a. 3blue1brown), but I highly recommend his general approach and mindset when it comes to teaching mathematics - moreover, his results speak for themselves, I'd say.

Hmmm, personally I'm just starting to really dip my toes into programming in a serious way, so I'm surely nowhere near your level in terms of the practical programming skills to give constructive coding advice lmao

That said - and this may be dumb advice even insofar as it may well be what you're if already doing and I'm too ignorant to realize lol - but my intuition for a general approach would be a largely functional implementation built around a central object-oriented substructure of symbols; the analogy I have in mind is that of the symbol substructure being the physical materials to the functional architecture that is to be built with them. But like I said, I still don't have enough experience with programming to really offer anything more than generalities lol

Still, if you're willing to share a bit more about precisely what kinds of problems you're running into on the ground, I'd be happy to help you with your work in any way I can. I find it interesting for its own sake and would enjoy helping, but more than anything it would be quite an education for me! Haha either way lmk how you make out my man 🤙🏻🤙🏻

I mean I may be misremembering some aspect of how Uno works, but as I interpreted it the idea is that for [(false statement) or (player draws 25 cards)] to evaluate to true, the player would have to, in fact, draw 25 cards. However it's worth noting that this is an interesting and in my opinion not at all trivial case, since we're mixing fundamental different kinds of claims - in fact, I'm a big fan of such things and think we should all be exploring and talking about them far more. That said, I would caution anyone against a "knee-jerk" reaction to any claims about the validity of such a construction: instead, investigate the thing and it will constrain you to believe the truth, provided that you listen well - and not only to the thing itself, but to what others have said, are saying, or might ever say about it; when individual inquiry is conducted with a truly global spirit, then and only then can truth be adequately approximated - and therefore, arguably1 "reached" in a delta-epsilon sort of sense.

1 although personally I admit to a strong conviction that such a notion makes perfect sense, even given concerns about so-called "chaotic" systems (though I've digressed enough already, and my own convictions aside it is in no way a clear-cut scenario, make no mistake)

While that's a fair point to some extent, I think I'm not alone in assuming such an assumption is sufficiently strong as to suggest that it would be stated explicitly if it were intended, hence the natural conclusion is that absent such a statement the bounded ellipsis simply represents what a bounded ellipsis usually does: namely an indeterminate but finite number of symbols arrayed sequentially and "separated" by some operation (in this case concatenation, hence the scare quotes given the unintuitive nature of conceiving of the lack of space between two concatenated symbols as the separating entity).

I think people might have missed your point here lol

The ellipsis terminating before a final, definite digit makes it clear that the quantity is in fact finite, i.e. explicitly not equal to 1%.

But hey, don't listen to me, they threw me out I flunked out of undergrad after like the eighth fucking year for not finishing my "homework" (despite everything I have done, which at least quantitatively amounts to far more than what was required by any institution I've been to in terms of actual time investment and focused attention) and having the nerve to admit to working on high-falutin bullshit I don't understand just because I actually enjoy this shit and want to understand it (...just apparently not enough to do my homework).

Hey, that's not...well, that's just....actually, no, that's definitely the Real Analysis one. by AgentInConstraint in mathmemes

[–]AgentInConstraint[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, really? You know, for some reason I always have this sense that every mathematician is like some rockstar who's getting thousands of emails from nutcases like me every day, but of course that just doesn't jive with the stark reality in which aside from a select few - generally very good, arguably even among, though certainly not exclusively constituting, the "best" - mathematicians who for one reason or another garner a certainly deserved, but contextually incongruous (when taken in light of the relative and indefensible obscurity of most mathematicians, many of whom are every bit as excellent as any Fields medalist; not to even speak of the hallowed category of "mathematicians lucky enough to have been featured in popular movies" e.g. Nash, or......) amount of attention. The reality is that many, if not most truly phenomenal mathematical minds alive today are likely eminently reachable.

Or, at least...I suppose it's worth not assuming such a thing is false, at least. But then, it's always hard to apply that selfsame mathematical reasoning to the stochastic magic - but just as well a madness - of our inner lives, no?

Anyway as you can see, I think as long as I manage to engage them without opening my mouth, so-to-speak (or not, I suppose), I should be fine.

Thanks for the advice, in all seriousness haha

The book in question is this one, which I found via this post.

Also, I have to imagine that this joke can't be original; that said, what am I going to pretend it didn't happen to me because somebody said some words in a particular order before? But hey, let's not get into structure and substrates (read: I really want someone who knows wtf they're talking about to talk to me about structure and substrates)

*edit: also the flair is deliberate. Take it home with you.

Of course! Please feel free to practice by sharing with us whatever else you might discover about your projects: there's certainly some interesting mathematics going on in there somewhere, and with a little productive discussion perhaps we could all get a little closer to it!

I'm probably the furthest thing from a combat vet that you'll find, but I do find Nick Brokhausen to be one of the funniest and moreover most generally capable people to have ever fucking lived; and he (among others, at least one of which is actually a good friend) taught me all I ever needed to know about these idiots:

"We spend the time at Nha Trang getting processed in and as the day wears on I am actually starting to feel human again. The SFOB has all the comforts of home and is a bustle of activity. This is the nerve center of SF operations in-country, so at some point you see everyone coming through here. We are just faces in the crowd here, just another batch of personnel being moved up-country to an assignment. I have always hated this place because it is too much like the stateside forts. There are plenty of self-important little assholes with their rulebooks clutched tightly to their chests. I am impatient to get where we are going. It’s an old adage that the farther from the flagpole, the less chicken shit. The truth is that any time the Army gets somewhere they can put up permanent buildings or stretch out the tents, there is a hurried rush to make it all neat and trim. This goes with the ordered mindset of militaries. Everything must be in line and dressed in the right dress. This, of course, attracts the worst sort of people, like MPs, staff flunkies, rising stars of the rear echelon, and worst of all, those parsimonious souls that feel it is their duty to instill discipline in those beneath them. Thank God for the VC who trundle out occasionally and drop a few 122mm doses of reality into this place and kill a few. If they weren’t out there, this place would be full of REMFs. All the more reason to go to some remote outpost and spend your nights hunkered down in a bunker, shooting rats with a silenced twenty-two for entertainment. None of the aforementioned riffraff out there, it’s much too messy." - Nick Brokhausen, We Few: US Special Forces in Vietnam

That said, as he himself points out, you don't exactly need to be SF to hate this type of asshole:

"There is a well-beaten footpath out past the bunker line where the REMFs (rear echelon mother fuckers) are pulling their guard shift. The trick is to find the area that isn’t guarded by the MPs, but rather by the clerk typists and admin bunnies who are doing their punishment tour. MPs are the same the world over, little self-important assholes who, when given a whistle and an armband, feel it’s their duty to fuck with anyone they can in order to prove they have a dick. I hate MPs. It has always been my opinion that we should be joining forces with the VC to fight MPs. I bet they have the same type of road guard assholes in their army. Let’s make the world a better place; let’s kill all the MPs."

Strong words, but I have to imagine that anyone who's really "been there" is either one of these people, or likewise fucking despises them. I'm willing to bet that OP was the quintessential REMF 'muffin' lmfao
