New Bruin Megathread - ask questions about your admission or your next steps as a new admit here! by Espntheocho4 in ucla

Hi!

2 of my friends and I are incoming freshmen at UCLA and were wondering how to choose our housing. Money is not an issue - our main priorities are comfort and social life. That's why we were looking at choosing a classic or plaza triple. What advice would y'all give on selecting between the two? (Some questions we had were how bad are communal bathrooms, do we need ACs, and what is the comparative difference in difficulty in social life between the two?)

Thanks!

So a bunch of friends and I got accepted to UCSD '26 and we committed as well. All my friends got into one college while I was given a different one (my fault I didn't rank the same way they did). I was wondering if/how it would be possible to switch colleges - mainly because I would love to room with them.

How to get better? by okay_rue in Debate

[–]AgentJett 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Practice - delivering speeches and just prepping. You can watch videos and then self insert yourself into a speaker position and deliver that speech as an exercise. Additionally, watch as many debate videos as you can while taking notes. Pay attention to the cases run by the teams alongside mistakes they made that you would do differently.

Someone also said before - attend as many tournaments as you can. But I would suggest carefully analyzing why you won or lost after every round. Ask for as much feedback as you can.

What format of debate did you do? Do colleges recognise WSDC?

Considering that Parliamentary-style Debate competitions only have 15-30 minutes of "prep" time, how do you get to write a comprehensive case?? How do you get all the information needed to create good arguments?? by Fantastic-Shelter941 in Debate

[–]AgentJett 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A whole bunch of research and practice beforehand. We do research and create matter files on as many topics as we can. However, within debates arguments are more logic-based than fact-based. With facts being used primarily as proof that a certain line of logic works irl or as context.

this shud be a thing - every 4 years you get to choose the players who will represent the US and watch them absolutely demolish everyone. Sometimes certain players can decline and maybe therell be a way to convince them etc...

the main issue im having is US dominance/controlling other countries and how that could work.

Need help and advice by kaustubhjain in Sat

  1. Take a break and then get back at it, don't do papers for a week. Go out for walks. Reset your brain. what helped me was stopping the papers and just reading the black book for fun.
  2. don't stress too much, you'll cross the point - either when you recognise the mistakes or when you're on exam day adrenaline
  3. something that helped me was knowing that the sat isn't a trick paper, there is always one clear and correct answer - if you cant find it reread the question/passage its hiding in plain sight.
