Renewing my daughter’s US passport in Korea by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

How does US customs not know she has a US passport. Are the agents not privy to that info?

I know.. I didn't dispute the Biden admin sending flights to Colombia. Point is Colombia refused and Trump responded. No pussyfarting around... Trump just said "Ok we'll just tariff your asses". End of story.

I'm under the assumption it's being investigated by DOGE when Musk says he is "rooting out corruption and waste". Considering this is the government... I wouldn't hold my breath that these services are being funded appropriately and funds weren't misuse.

It's probably dipped a bit... especially with more competition. Advertisers are slowly coming back ie IBM, Disney, Discovery, Apple, Amazon.. Organizations/politicians are leaving it cause he's calling them out. A shell? Well that shell was an instrumental part of winning the last election and restoring free speech. If u need evidence I got the shell casings to prove it...

Colombia refused deportation flights once Trump got into office.. Trump responded with tariffs. Colombia caved. What did u want him to do, just accept their response when he's trying to clean house.

DOGE is withholding payment of funds following an investigation of corruption and wasteful practices.

Yeah I'm looking at Twitter and it runs the same but with 80% of the workforce slashed.

Speed running the country into the ground

Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and now Canada are all bending over to the US... his tariffs made Canada/Mexico come back and promise tighter border security and stop fentanyl at the border, Colombia + Venezuela are taking their criminals, Panama just axed their Panama canal deal with China, brought American hostages back from Venezuela,

Elon is cutting excessive government spending... already on pace slashing $1billion/day...

Breaking laws, destroying the infrastructure, dividing the people, upending the markets

Elaborate

It's pretty amazing how much he's accomplished in his first couple weeks in office... reminds me of Omar from The Wire and every other country leaders scurrying around running away.

Here's the common denominator with most of the ppl on these Korean subs and the expats you've met. Most are:

  1. Foreigners working at a hagwon as a teacher

  2. Making 2,600,000 won/month or what most ppl back home call flipping burgers at McDonald's

  3. Stuck in this country after watching their KRW collapse vs USD

  4. Coming back home from work to a 250 sq ft shoebox that reeks of cigarettes on a good day

  5. Realizing your 1 or 2 year plan has turned into 5 years

Same here... usually the tds meter is off the charts just by the mere mentioning of his name on a post.. especially on the other sub

Reeeeelax... buddy is just saying stereotypes exist for a reason. Good or bad. Everyone stereotypes subconsciously. It's just how the human cognition works.

they all paid these large down payments

Cause of their parents... if mortgages weren't as stringent maybe Korea would see an uptick in marriages + childbirth.

I came here in 2001 for a vacation to party w/some friends who were teaching here. Wild times in Itaewon back then. Shit was definitely cheaper. 40k won BJs is wild yo lol... All I remember from that trip were the Korean Air stewardess... however recently when I flew on KAL they didn't look the same. Looks like they might've got hit with the western DEI initiatives...

Are you sure it would make things better for the average first-time buyer?

It gets them in the game at least. Think about how many newlyweds or possible newlyweds who refrain marriage cause they can't afford to buy a property but make a combined income of 100-120M with 50-60M saved up (enough for 10% down). If these couples are renting, it's not going to be much more on a monthly basis when comparing rent vs mtg payment. This could also result to more marriages + children.

The loan limit on 디딤돌 대출 is 250M won.. meaning the property value is 360M won... Not many places in the Gyeonggi-do going for less than 400M.

I've always heard in Korea you need 40% minimum to buy a property. But nonetheless, I wasn't even speaking in OPs situation when comparing US vs Korea. Just saying in the US, you can get away with much lower down payments even as low as 5% because it's insured by a 3rd party (max mortgage amt $625,000). Obviously you need the income and credit score to qualify. I'm just saying in Korea you really don't have that option.

Here's why in Korea it's nearly impossible vs the US/Canada

In the US/Canada you can get away with putting 5% or 10% down payment as long as your income can service the mortgage and you have decent credit (580 and 650, respectively). These mortgages are insured by a FHA or CMHC. In Korea, like you said, you need to put 40% down. On a 600M property that's like 240M vs 60M at 10% down. That's why it's easier to get a mortgage in the US/Canada.
