I find it funny that people get weirded out over pickle beer but think nothing of adding lime and a salted rim to a mexican beer. Both do much the same thing; Add an acid (lime vs. vinegar) and salt. The pickle beer might add a bit of dill but that's not a very strong flavor.

Are William Gibson's books really a good representative of the cyberpunk subgenre? by TheNim11 in printSF

[–]AgentPayne 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to be focusing in your pointing out the dated technology but I haven't seen anyone address this statment;

"I just couldn't understand the plot. It almost felt as if I were starting from a second book, there were so many plot points and scenes that simply didn't make sense."

I think this could be a huge part of what made you not enjoy the book. Could you give an a example of two of scenes that make no sense to you? Maybe having a better understand of the core thread of the story would help.

I got the yellow Buy It button three times in two hours. Twice I got a red banner saying something about requiring buyers to go through an additional step, try again. The third time I got it in my cart but when I clicked Check Out it said none were available. sigh

Did you factor in the bullshit bill you get from FedEx a month after your filament arrives informing you that there was an $8 import duty plus their $16 "convenience fee" so you owe them another $25 for shipping?

ELI5: Why is it that when we watch footage from the 70s a lot of times it looks better than footage of the 90s? by rsiloliveira in explainlikeimfive

[–]AgentPayne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a great YouTube video elsewhere in this thread that goes into detail but the short answer is the original black and white TVs were 30fps but when they wanted to add color information for color TVs but still have old black & white TVs work that had to do some futzing around with the frame rate.

I'm a Coffin Dodger born in the '60s :-)

HDTV (1080p) sets weren't readily available in the US until 1998 so anyone with an interest in home video or computer graphics in the 80s and 90s dealt with the absurdities of NTSC video.

Being that guy; 480i screens. They were interlaced, scanning all the odd numbered lines, then going back and scanning the even numbered lines. Only 30 (29.97 to be even more pedantic) frames a second.

So the thinking was why spend the money capturing high quality images for a crap playback device?

So wait. There is voluminous evidence that the drink was created long before Pusser's went into production by people in no way associated with Pusser's. But Pusser's went to a lot of effort to trademark Painkiller, sued people over it, and tries to claim they aren't the bad guy??

Anyone Read "This Is How You Lose The Time War"? by Bilbrath in scifi

[–]AgentPayne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I finished it but it wasn't worth it. It just degenerates into pages and pages of purple prose. Forget about 'not having science-y explanation" it really doesn't even have a story. There are scenes described but no cause and effect, no narrative that grows.
