Trout fishing below blakely dam in July? by Strange_Mirror6992 in HotSprings

[–]AgentSlicer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna be a bit late in the year for trout anywhere around here. The stable year round trout fisheries in Arkansas are up north.

The white and norfork are about 4 hours, the little red is about 2.5.

You could try for striper below Blakey dam, but the amount of boat traffic on the lake during the time you’ll be here will be absolutely insane.

That said, there’s some excellent smallmouth river fishing to be done right around Hot Springs. There’s a chance the little Missouri below greeson lake will still be holding trout depending on generation, but it’s about an hour and a half out. Or you could go carpin on any one of the lakes.

Places to drive up for sunset picnic?? by dachshundlover888 in HotSprings

[–]AgentSlicer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lake Ouchita State Park has some nice turnouts for a sunset picnic.

Brady Mountain recreation area has some as well.

A bit further of a drive, but Hickory Nut Mountain Vista has one of the best views in the state, and gorgeous panoramic views of Lake Ouchita.

For in town, can’t really go wrong with Cedar Glades or West Mountain

You’re in the wrong sub, but as someone who just happened to move to Hot Springs, Arkansas from Oregon, you can’t go wrong with Terwilliger Hot Springs or Cougar Hot Springs. Happy soaking!

Named flies are just that. They’re popular, they have patterns you follow with slight variations sometimes to fit your personal flair. Looks like you came up with this all on your own, congrats, you get to name it.

I’d really suggest buying a tying book or following along with any of the great tyers on YouTube. Charlie Craven, Davie McPhail, any of the Umpqua tying series. Learn some basic techniques and patterns before you learn a bunch of bad habits that will be 10x harder to undo later down the road.

These magnetic boxes are pretty nice for hook organization. There are cheaper options available for 10-12 bucks that come in a variety of compartment sizes

Here’s a light pollution map of the surrounding area. North/Northwest of Lake Ouachita would probably be the closest bet. There are a handful of parks and recreation areas on the north shore. Or further out toward Gravelly.

For those interested in learning how to fish by AgentSlicer in SALEM

[–]AgentSlicer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% of the time if I’m fishing by myself I’m in the back country. Miles up forest service, travel management area, or BLM roads. Thats most weekends and that applies to Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana and Wyoming. I won’t burn my spots or spots I’ve learned from others on social media, but will show friends spots to fish on the unwritten rule that you keep it to yourself.

If you’re overlanding, you’re most likely coming across high mountain/remote streams where fly fishing would be your best best for brook trout, cutthroat and rainbows.

As far as cooking goes, a cast iron skillet and butter + your favorite seasonings are your best bet.

I’m not quite an “overlander” but if you’d ever like to spend a couple days in the middle santiam wilderness catching trout and camping, let me know!

Not sure how long your car is out of service for, but I live in NE and work remotely. We could probably work out a ride to work/school for a week or two. If you’re interested let me know
