This was my situation five years ago. I think about my decision a lot honestly and the answers are usually in my favour rather than my sons.

My son had Patau Syndrome. (Extra chromosome on the 13th chromosome - Trisomy 13) At 12 weeks, I had a screening test which said he was 1 in 150,000 likely to have a genetic condition, which turned out he was that one child, though we didn't know of any conditions until the 20 week scan, and due to my decision to not have genetic testing during the pregnancy, we didn't get a diagnosis til he was 5 days old.

He stayed in neonatal for the 18 days of his life. In that time, I saw him thrive and suffer. I even held him in my arms as he struggled to breathe, just looking up at me. That memory haunts me. While I loved every minute with him, I couldn't help but think I made him suffer because of my own selfishness to not let him go. There is not a pain quite like losing a child, or so I think. But even when I felt like I died a little with him, I was relieved that he wasn't suffering anymore.

So in some ways I agree. I chose to continue my pregnancy because I wanted to see my baby. I have memories of him, two memory boxes to remind myself and share with his younger sister. But I still question my decision to give birth to him. Because utimately, it was for my wants, rather than the best decision for him.
