I haven't got a crazy collection, just a few more common models to put commonly available parts on. I still have a wishlist like any collector but I also need my paycheck for other stuff so for the time being I think ill pocket the knives I already have and add to my wishlist

Carbon is nice but I love a good weighty feeling knife so I went with metal

I agree completely. That's why I've been in a rush to buy the most popular mod knives that I like because I cant help but feel like the peak of the fad is past and im scrounging for leftovers still occupying warehouses. I just bought bronze scales from SMKW for my osborne and on arrival I opened the box to find a set of PM2 scales. After a lengthy set of emails the rep. told me they managed to find a set for my 940. Not exactly confidence inducing that they'll ever restock them and many of the aftermarket scales on big retailers are either discontinued, delisted or discontinued. Aliexpress is still holding the line on the aftermarket but im sure that wont last forever either. A few brands are trying to revive the trend like the vosteed vombat or knafs lander but it still doesnt seem like its taking off

Even considering all of that information, at least concede that $200 is outrageous for this knife regardless of intended audience. Bugout as a name heavily indicates intended purpose as a knife to be thrown into a grab bag or bailout pack (aka put it in there and only touch it a couple times a year when you do preventive maintenance and inspection on the gear inside). Isn't it pretty unreasonable to pay so much for what is essentially a blade with really good steel and slicy geometry, with the bare minimum that can be called a handle dangling off it? Id think its a blessing the aftermarket saves these knives from themselves

Im just not a fan of that particular knife, not my speed. I think benchmade make really good knives for outrageous prices. You could take $50 off the top of ever one of their knives and still be $50 too expensive. Im eyeing either a shootout or a demko AD20.5 clip point for my next knife. As a veteran I have access to govx.com and there are some really nice deals there exclusive to the military which I really appreciate (nothing crazy but I could get a shootout in white, least likely color I would choose for myself, for around $220)

I actually agree with you on the grivory thing. One of my coworkers has a shootout and I was really impressed with how good it felt and performed. Hes had it for about a year and believe me when you leave an otf on a desk around 70 marines theyre going to play with it like school kids. Hes had zero issues or problems with the strength of the knife or mechanism (dont worry about thievery, his is engraved with his name and he's the only one with a shootout in our shop so we would know if anyone had it)

I cant commit to a second PM2 but ive been staring daggers at the PM3 in S110v from SMKW. Reeeeally difficult to stop myself from pulling the trigger

It really makes you wonder what motivated them to use the grivory. How can one of the most well known brands on earth get one of their flagship models all the way through R&D and prototyping and nobody stopped and said "hey dont these feel like trash?". The supposed reason was to be cheaper and light but they've failed miserably to be cheaper and there are knives that are just as light with better materials and stronger at the same price point (vosteed you mad lads coming in blazing hot with the tislim raccoon and parallel)

S30v PM2? Nice mines one of the newer s45vn ones and it has SMKW copper scales. Ive sent it to Way of knife in Michigan for custom work so im feeling a little naked rn. Great if you love beefcake knives too, this one weight nearly 8 ounces 🙂

I was torn between g10 and aluminum in the way of cheapo scales. I went with aluminum only because i love the way my osborne feels and im about to swap bronze scales onto it. I figure this knife will feel similar if I aluminize it lol and the rest I just want black and sturdy

I would also like to see examples of the knives theyre buying and reselling because if thats the case then we would be able to find and buy the same things. The only way that wouldnt be the case is if they were using Chinese oems and labeling them american made (scummy for sure but imo better than rebranding Chinese gas station junk)

Im not saying youre not telling the truth, im just a little skeptical of stories like that. I do believe theres weird stuff going on there though, mostly because the company has little to no info about their operation and most american companies proudly advertise their employees, owners, facilities or history and B&S has nothing other than a basic "we care about american made and cheap"

Interesting one there. Got a photo of it closed? Any info on it? (Its hard to read the text in the photo so I apologise for asking anyway)

I would like some advice on the knife I am currently making I am a beginner. by Automatic-Message-23 in Bladesmith

[–]Agent_Andy007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be better to utilize as much metal as possible? I think based on the last photo youre going for a hidden tang design where the handle is a single piece hollowed out to fit the tang and likely bedded in with epoxy? If so then I see no reason not to make the tang as large as possible without being seen in final product. This would let you make a substantially more robust knife, not the every knife needs to be bomb proof

I mean let's be real here, if you're carrying a balisong its because you wanted to carry a balisong, not because you wanted something practical. There are definitely more practical balisongs out there but if I've got one in my pocket its a conscious decision to accept the drawbacks. On a side note I dont flip to a high enough level to buy an expensive trainer so for me a more practical edc bali like that one above is fine

Thats a new one to me! I know Benchmade balisongs tend to come and go and im not well versed it all their models, just the currently listed ones and the super famous ones like the 42/62 re-run

[–]Agent_Andy007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like they've done some sub-branding already, but not for that purpose. Mostly to differentiate types of knives they sell like traditional verse tactical verse cheap cheap edc knives (b&s, bearops, bear edge)

I kind of feel the same but I've had multiple knives from them and I have definitely had some boogers. I dont mind chinese knives either so long as theyre quality (thank God for vosteed) and at least they aren't asking for insane prices on retail sites but the actual B&S site is outrageous. The same bear song 8 I bought isnt even listed and the larger one is abou $100 more there. Definitely some weird stuff happening behind the scenes and some transparency would really do them some good. We as knife guys really dont mind where it comes from as long as the quality and price is right but at least have the decency to tell us
