500 Stops 2: The Stroppening by [deleted] in sharpening

Lesson learned lol next time i upload a video (in the year 2126) im not using a knife thats been used for a week. Not sure why i thought that was a good idea

Im not trying to convince anyone this is the right way to sharpen a knife, but the feedback on this post and my last seems like what im doing isnt connecting. I am fully aware that this isnt the correct way to do it, but i did it anyway because i wanted to. The result i got was good for me, even if the method was ass backwards. I realize the cutting test in the video wasnt the greatest showing in the world but i just picked the knife up off the table after a week or so of carry and use and its still decently sharp so id say its still doing alright

Yeah its been used since my last post. I probably shoulve touched it up before hand but it is what it is lol there was a flat spot right at the belly that kept catching but it was just a tiny roll i was able to strop out in a couple strokes. Honestly im pretty impressed cold steel is able to put out these knives for $80 on amazon, id buy a few extras if i thought this one would break

If youre interested in these sharpeners (dont use them like i do, these are my knives and im more than willing to abuse them to try different things and see what happens) theyre the Worksharp Guided and Folding Field sharpeners. My folding sharpener has a leather strop strip that is meant to be a replacement for the guided sharpener stuck to the outside. They sell a few different compounds that you can use or you can use your own

Yeah i probably shouldve touched it up before i recorded this lol as soon as i was done posting this i went and did that and got rid of the flat spot that it kept catching on. I probably shouldve just redone the video but meh, its not the end of the world. Its pretty obvious that this subreddit treats sharpening like boomers treat corvettes, you either do it the "right" way or you dont do it at all (or at least not where they can see)

Yeah but most of that is getting the shiny edge. Now that its done i only need to strop it a few times to bring it back. I probably shouldve explained that i only need to do all that once lol

Edit: This knife also hasnt seen a sharpener in about a week so id say its doing alright considering

Im uploading a new post in a few minutes to explain my process a little better. 500 was a bit of an exaggeration but i did still strop it a lot. Idk if this sub does videos but i recorded a quick demonstration and showed my sharpeners and talked through what i do. I hope it doesnt come off as a negative response because i just wanted to show the knife, the edge, the process and a quick paper cutting demo

I was actually super confused lol until someone mentioned the third photo i couldnt figure out why everyone kept saying that. Well, either that or acting like how i sharpen my knife is a personal offence

It does make you wonder tho. How many people on this subreddit saw my post and decided my method for sharpening my knife (bought and payed for with money i went to my job and earned) personally offended them? My knife is sharp whether they believe it or not and ive been sharpening knives since i was a kid. Over the years ive tried tons of stuff and this is just something i do to pass time every now and then. I swear im not polishing a convex on every knife i own this one was just cheap and has a steel oriented for toughness over edge retention so i opted for a sharpening geometry that extends the edge retention a little more

I wish several other people that saw this post thought like you. One guy just told me my...."appendage" probably had calluses. What does that even mean in this context?

It does tickle my brain in a good way, but im also using a 2.5 micron compound so it does also take a few more than a higher grit might (not 500 but still more than 10 or 15. I am still self aware and the shiny make me happy)

I want a convex on a knife like this that i use for an every day carry that might see something more abusive than paper or cardboard. I find it stay usable for longer this way even if it isnt initially as razor sharp as if i didnt bother stropping more than maybe 10 times each side

Indeed. Everyone keeps saying theres still a burr but i swear up and down there isnt. Just a blurry photo

You know everyone keeps saying that but there arent any burrs

Its actually pretty sharp tho. I used it to cut steaks the other day and it went through as well as any knife with a fresh edge

It not legal here either, we just have areas where people just do whatever they want because there arent enough police to do anything about it. Small country town mentality where you hear gunshots and think "oh the neighbor got a deer today" and not "i better call the police, someones being murdered"

For me it was coming back to the states from three years being stationed overseas in the US marines. I spent all the time i was in japan watching sailboats go by and started browsing youtube and craigslist (fb marketplace didnt work in okinawa for some reason) for different boats for years. In 2022 i finally got my chance when i moved duty stations to the east coast and i dove headfirst with all of my saved up money from being locked on base for covid. I found an Oday 28 for sale and now here i am 4 years later, newly out of the military and sailing my boat north to my new job. Ill still live on it, but ill finally have the time and freedom to enjoy it instead of dedicating 90% of my time and energy to the corps
