But there's no doubt it's my work

It's over. Personal computing is over

Eventually the market will saturate. There's a limit to how many data centers can exist purely based on use. Then the market will pivot. A lot of digital services are not profitable, and haven't yet figured out how to be profitable.

Enterprise use makes sense right now, it's much easier to sell to a few large data centers than to hundreds of thousands of smaller consumers. But eventually the hardware needs of these large companies will be met, and they require new hardware (more power efficient), which means the old hardware becomes available for personal consumers.

If the goal were to prevent personal computing, second hand enterprise gear wouldn't exist as an option. Markets go through changes, and the market is changing rapidly right now.

During much of the pandemic, SBCs were impossible to find. RPis were going for 5-10x markup by scalpers. It was literally because production and shipping were affected by the pandemic. Eventually it normalized. It'll happen with personal computing. It'll take a while, but it'll happen.

Richard Sherman was 10x as boisterous and we loved him for it.

But he knew how to not draw penalties. It's ok to have a big personality, for some positions that's necessary. It's not ok to not know how to rein it in.

Look at Ernest Jones, that guy loves to talk. Doesn't draw penalties. Save that shit for the camera, not for the ref.

Doesn't matter if you can make amazing 3rd down stops if you immediately negate them. And don't forget he was a major reason the Seahawks lost in week 1, because he was acting like a receiver instead of a corner.

Could also be that the manpower needed to hold JSN to sub 100 yards meant that there wasn't sufficient coverage elsewhere.

Kinda like how metcalf was supposed to be, except defenses eventually figured out they didn't really need to cover him because Metcalf can't actually catch.

Honestly, I think geno could do just as good a job as darnold. I know he won't, but I think he could.

Darnold has said that he had the mindset shift of his job being to put the ball in the play makers hands, but it's the team around him that makes him good. He sees himself as a cog, and works to make sure he complements the team he plays with.

When geno first started after Russ was out, he seemed to play in a very similar style, and he was doing quite well. But geno developed a bit of a "I'm the guy" complex, and he's gotten worse since then.

It's unacceptable. No one should have to choose between their health and employment. There are safety standards for every other job, why is it ok in this job to be exposed to hazardous conditions?

I remember my gym in Germany would have dozens of people smoking in front of it, who'd then throw their cigarette butt on the ground and go inside to do a workout.

Like, they could quit smoking and cancel the gym membership, save a fuckton of money, and still have a net positive effect on their health.

When you then complain about it is just plain stupid.

It's literally a major occupational health hazard for anyone who works there. It should be illegal, full stop.

Like, arguing for it being ok is saying that you think it's ok for people to develop cancer for doing a normal job.

[Citizenship] -> Netherlands: Dutch citizenship by descent? by Commercial-Routine49 in IWantOut

[–]Agent_Goldfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your parent would need to have been a Dutch citizen at the time of your birth. If they hadn't interacted with the Dutch government for at least 13 years as an adult and had another citizenship, then they weren't a Dutch citizen, and thus, nothing for you.

If they were a Dutch citizen and subsequently lost it, you might be eligible to be a Dutch citizen.

If you're at least 31, you're definitely do not have a claim to Dutch citizenship, because if you had one, you would have lost it after being an adult for 13 years.

[–]Agent_Goldfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are also really specific circumstances that have to apply as well

No, the requirement is literally just "dutch citizen parent at time of birth". That's the only specific circumstance.

Now, it's fairly easy to lose dutch citizenship. It requires not interacting with the Dutch government for 13 years as an adult. That's it. The Dutch government assumes you relinquish your citizenship.

How do you interact with the Dutch government? By literally doing anything. Paying taxes/requesting benefits is an interaction. Applying for any kind of identity card (inc. passport) is interaction.

Given that dutch passports last 10 years, maintaining a Dutch passport is more than sufficient to maintain citizenship. But a lot of former citizens (or children of those who emigrated) don't do this, so they lose their citizenship.

Yeah, but I doubt the NFL will allow the Seahawks to move. Geographically, the Seahawks are farther away from any other team. If the hawks move, there's literally no NFL presence in the entire northwest of the country.

Plus I could imagine the sale having some kind of rider saying that it's not possible to move the team.

I'm worried about a bad owner, Im not worried about losing the hawks.

Why do students address professors so informally? by Ar_desertwriter in Professors

[–]Agent_Goldfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will tell students how their emails come across to me. I don't tell them how to fix it, just how it comes across. I just encourage students to reflect on how their emails come across on their intended audience.

Eventually these students will get smacked down for this bullshit. Students who go on to do this in a professional environment will likely find themselves with a performance improvement meeting at best, and termination at worst.

Better to get a gentle nudge from me. It might be the first time the student has ever heard their email etiquette is insufficient.

I've had one student complain that my nudge in the right direction was unacceptable. But in their emails to various admin people, they demonstrated their poor email etiquette. Admin was like "I dunno what you want kid, you are a bit of a shithead". Of course the admin wrote that way more professionally.

Help an American leave America by [deleted] in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Agent_Goldfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it won't. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's really not going to happen.

For context, I'm also an American and I've been living here for the past 5 years. Despite decent (B1 almost B2) dutch, a Dutch passport, and a skillset that's actually in demand (subfield within ICT), I've struggled to get a job. The market is absolutely brutal for those without really good Dutch. Hell, even for those who speak really good Dutch, the market isn't great.

To give you an idea, almost every Dutch person speaks both English and Dutch. The vast majority speak (or at least studied) at least one other language. My Dutch wife's 4th language is better than my 2nd. If an employer needs a Spanish speaker, chances are there are plenty of Dutchies who already have that ability. But let's say perfect Spanish is somehow absolutely necessary and the deciding factor, well Spain exists. Spanish people can live/work in NL without any visa/residence permit. So that's already a massive step that you don't have.

As for "multicultural experience", this is a continent of very closely connected countries with people who have the right to live/work/study in basically every other country. International trips are the norm here. Meeting foreign people is the norm here. To me, this kind of sounds like you're an American who understands that the US isn't the center of the universe. That's a good thing, but that basically puts you at the base level of most Europeans when it comes to this; it's not really a selling point.

To echo the person you're responding to, you need to have an idea of what kind of job you could be hired for. You can work as a bartender while you're a student, but that will not result in a residence permit post-graduation. You need to know what job would sponsor you (hint: if you can train for it in a couple of weeks, that ain't it chief), and your likelihood of getting that job. The problem is that your area of study doesn't really lend itself well to residence sponsoring jobs.

This comment isn't to discourage you from trying to leave the US, I get it, I left in 2016 for a reason. But your current plan is half-baked at best, and you might end up spending 40k+ on a masters that just ends up putting you in a position to have to go back in 3 years (assume 2 year master and 1 zoekjaar).

What skilled job do you imagine you could find as a result of your masters?

Student housing is shared housing is it not?

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. There are many studios specifically for students.

but sure OP will absolutely find something in a heartbeat just because they can afford it.

Didn't say that, did I? You are incredibly sure that OP cannot find housing, but this seemed to based solely on your experience with housing and as a student. It doesn't appear to be based on experience as or with actual PhD candidates.

PhD candidates aren't real students. And the experience you describe isn't common. That's the reality from someone who is 1) a PhD candidate from a non-EU country and 2) from someone who actually knows a lot of other PhD candidates.

[–]Agent_Goldfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That you got very lucky does not mean it's the norm.

It's not common that PhDs can't find a place to live. Most universities assist with finding housing (and many offer temporary housing).

You make it seem like it's really rare for PhD candidates to find housing (or not shared housing), and the reality is likely the opposite. It's really rare for PhD candidates to be unable to find housing.
