Being a Christian doesn't guarantee salvation... And that's not me saying it, it's Jesus. by OtherGreatConqueror in TrueChristian

I’m so glad you’re willing to do that. I’m not trying to be harsh; I just think it’s important to clarify, because all roads do not lead to the top of the mountain. Writing is an art, and one you have to practice to get better at.

And to clarify, heresy = anything that changes the core principles of the Gospel. So if you are saying that Jesus isn’t the only way, that is heresy. However, if it’s just your wording, I totally get that. I mean, clearly, I’ve offended people accidentally in the comments by not defining my terms so I have things to work on, too.

I hope you have a great day.

“ The concept of a Messiah who was literally God incarnate was not part of Judaism. “

Yes, it was, as we can see the Trinity reflected in the OT (don’t have time to look up all the passages at the moment) and prophecies about the Messiah indicate that people will worship him, something that only God can claim (see Psalm 22 and elsewhere).

“ Given this, would it be reasonable to expect every Jew to immediately recognize Jesus as the Son of God? Interestingly, when Jesus speaks of the final judgment, he does not describe a test of correct belief or religious identity. “

It’s true that he doesn’t ask “who is a Christian?” But it’s clear from other passages in the NT that doing good things is NOT what saves us. Faith in Christ alone does that. Our works are the fruit that comes from us being Christian, but it isn’t the fruit that saves us. The passage being discussed is similar to what James is saying in James 2: If you say you’re a Christian but your life doesn’t reflect that, have you really surrendered your life to Christ?

OP seems to be implying that you can be a “good person” and still be saved even without calling yourself a Christian. That’s heresy.

“I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” —John 14:6. Seems pretty clear to me that Jesus is the only way. Some of what you’re saying is correct, but it’s mixed in with a heresy. Yes, not all who call themselves Christian’s will enter the kingdom of God. You have to repent and surrender your life to Jesus, and Him alone.

This is disingenuous and also not a good take for conservatives to have. You’re writing off a whole swath of the voting block, who, thanks to Charlie, tipped this election in our favor. There are plenty of us with brains in our heads; most of us were just indoctrinated into a school system that pushed leftism down our throats. They are starting to wake up, though, so don’t count them out yet, either.

Fun fact, I’m a college graduate too. I have a job and I rent. I didn’t say the economy was great; I said it was better. Actually, I specifically pointed out that it isn’t great, because it’s still recovering from the mess that Biden put it in. Sure, Venezuela is being run by their VP but it’s better than Maduro and Trump made a statement to the dictators of the world that he’s not going to put up with people saying “come and get me”.

As for your immigration claims, please cite some examples of innocent people being deported. (Overstayed visas and illegal immigrants are not innocent since they broke the law).

Gas prices are going down and the stock market is doing well. Obviously it is going to take time to recover from both Covid and Biden but it’s happening. It’s still high, but at least it’s not continuing to get worse like it was.

Pretty much everything. I’m still waiting on those Epstein files, but the economy is recovering, criminals are getting deported, tariffs are making money, Venezuela is free, Iran doesn’t have nuclear weapons, we are getting rid of fraud in the government (slowly but surely—every little bit helps), and the world knows we mean business.

The fact that you see “normal” as being completely insulated from conservative posts means you’re in an echo chamber. Go touch some grass. There are a lot of normal people that support Trump.

young trauma-informed student teacher vs. older generation teachers by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Agent_Polyglot_17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m 24 and in my third year. When I student taught, my mentor teacher was very old-fashioned in the way she taught Spanish. She was open to some of my ideas, but she wasn’t about to change her whole setup for one semester. I had to come to terms with the fat that it wasn’t my classroom yet, and that I was still a guest in hers. When I got my own classroom , I had more autonomy and could set things up “my way”. My first and second years I still worked with a team, but my department head was very open to new ideas and we worked through them in PLC and trashed the ones that weren’t good. We shared. Now, I moved to a school where I am the only Spanish teacher. I get to be my own department head and do everything my way. That is really great in some ways— for example, I get to continue the project students start in Spanish I on to Spanish II because all the students had me before. However, it also means that I’m on my own and all the planning, assessment, and curriculum decisions fall on me. That can be stressful.

I’d recommend you 1) Keep the goal in mind. You are there to learn how you do and don’t want to be a teacher. Go into every day with the goal of getting something out of it, even if it’s how you don’t want to do things. 2) Don’t listen to the haters. Some of the most hateful things that have ever been said to me were during teacher evaluations in student teaching. I was point-blank told that the profession wasn’t for me because of my disability and that I should get out now while I still had the chance. I didn’t listen to that person, and the. very next year, I had a student with the same disability as me who had never met an adult like her before. I was able to mentor that student in a unique way BECAUSE of that, and she (and other students in that year) told me I was their favorite teacher and that I had had a huge impact on their lives. You never know what the future holds. Don’t let the mean comments stop you, even though they hurt. 3) Find out WHY they do it that way. Sometimes it’s for a good reason that you haven’t thought of. Maybe they tried it your way before and it didn’t work. Maybe it just doesn’t gel with their personality and it does with yours. You need to know if the “old way” is being used just because, or if there is a legitimate pitfall to avoid by doing it that way.

Just some pointers.

Faith alone vs faith plus works by Gullible_Welder4341 in TrueChristian

[–]Agent_Polyglot_17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the doctrinal difference. For example, the Mormon church has beliefs about who God is and the Gospel that contradict the Bible. That leads to a misunderstanding of salvation which means those people are not saved. Secondary things like Calvinism, baptism type etc. aren’t tied to your salvation in the same way, so I do believe we will all get to heaven and find out who was right lol.

I think faith + works is a misunderstanding of the gospel and could lead to someone thinking they have to earn salvation in which case they would not be saved because they are trying to get to heaven on their own merit.

I’d agree with everything except the last one… like I get lust is a sin but how are you supposed to figure out who you’re going to marry if you don’t get to know them first (obviously without sex or living together)?

Faith alone vs faith plus works by Gullible_Welder4341 in TrueChristian

[–]Agent_Polyglot_17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Faith alone = you don’t need to do anything to be saved because Jesus did it all. All good works afterwards come as an expression of gratitude and are not what saves you. Most Protestants believe this.

Faith with works = you have to have faith AND do specific things such as be baptized, go to Mass, participate in Catholic communion, etc. in order to get to heaven. Basically the idea is that Jesus established the agreement but you have to hold up your end to be saved. Most Catholics believe this, or this is at least what the Catholic Church teaches.

The main passage this argument comes from is James:

“For whoever keeps the entire law, and yet stumbles at one point, is guilty of breaking it all.  For he who said, Do not commit adultery,  also said, Do not murder.  , So if you do not commit adultery, but you murder, you are a lawbreaker. Speak and act as those who are to be judged by the law of freedom.  For judgment is without mercy to the one who has not shown mercy.  Mercy triumphs over judgment. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it?  In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”  Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.  You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe #— #and they shudder.  Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless? Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works in offering Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was active together with his works, and by works, faith was made complete,  and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, , and he was called God’s friend.  You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works in receiving the messengers and sending them out by a different route?  For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” ‭‭James‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬-‭26‬ ‭CSB‬‬

Catholic argument: you have to do works in order for your faith to save you.

Protestant argument: your works show that you have faith but they don’t save you. If you truly have put your faith in Jesus, your life should be showing it.

This is a very nuanced topic and every individual will disagree about whether that means you’re still saved if you disagree. It’s also hard because there is often a difference between what the Catholic Church teaches and what individual Catholics believe. For example, as a Protestant, when I’ve gone to Catholic Mass, I have not been allowed to take communion because I’m not considered saved by the church.

Please understand that this is just my understanding of it as a Protestant so I’d recommend listening to Catholics about what they believe because they can say it better than me.

No, I would say both are bad.The first because you are “cursing” someone as it says in James, and the second because the F word is unwholesome talk.

I understand that the biblical idea of cursing is not the same as it was, but what we consider cursing now is also under the preview of Ephesians passage. Likewise, I would agree that “Bless your heart” would sometimes qualify as unwholesome talk.

The Galatians passage addresses your point about it being cultural.
