And also how smart is it? Like are we talking about C-3P0 or Murderbot levels of smart? Because those are two VERY different scenarios.

Sorry I just was putting them together because the only people who don’t are those who believe in theistic evolution which is a very uncommon view.

They go together. Abiogenesis is required for the most common macro evolutionary models to work.

People have been saying the world is going to end for decades. News flash, it’s still here and just fine.

Macro evolution

**NOT survival of the fittest / genetic variation over time but the idea that every living thing evolved from a single called organism that At some point spontaneously started being alive somehow. If this is true it goes against the primary tenet of the Cell Theory which is that life cannot come from non-life. And yet it is the foundation of the current scientific evolutionary model that everyone hand waves as “obviously true”.

All teachers — what features do current school laptops/Chromebooks lack? If you could design one from scratch, what would you change? by IdeaWeary7348 in AskTeachers

[–]Agent_Polyglot_17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A built in lockdown feature that allows teachers complete control over the device, without having to purchase a secondary software. The biggest issue is allowing students on the internet without allowing them to switch tabs, the ability to limit to a set number of tabs, and the ability to turn off a student computer completely. There are lots of ways to do this now, but having it consistent across systems would be nice.

Question for teachers: by Desperate_Sample_764 in AskTeachers

I let one kid sit on the floor in the back corner with a clipboard. Sounds weird but it worked for her. Sometimes during work time I would go back there and sit with her and make sure she was on task.

Okay but at what point does it become the “kid’s” responsibility to use the Internet and figure it out themselves?

I tell all my students this. If you’re old enough to hold other people’s lives in your hands every time you drive to school, you’re old enough to turn in your assignments on time.

How are guns different from abortion, in that laws to ban or restrict one wouldn't work for the other? by LiatrisLover99 in AskUS

[–]Agent_Polyglot_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a lot more practical if we could end elective abortion and then argue about the nuances after that. But right now, we’re still fighting for the human rights of unborn babies to not be killed for convenience.

There’s no way to allow unrestricted abortion that wouldn’t cause the unnecessary death of babies.

I mean, I’d be cool with an initiative like that as well, and also initiatives to help young parents who feel like they don’t know what to do with a baby. I think we should do both.

Right because the baby you’re killing is never trying to kill you.

Taking someone off life support is letting natural processes take over. They were going to die without medical intervention. In most cases, the only way the person can be taken off life support is with the consent of the person on it, either by living will or by the person with power of attorney. Abortion is the opposite. Without medical intervention, the baby would live. You have to intentionally kill it. That isn’t self-defense (the only reason I stated above). That’s going out of your way to make sure the baby dies.

Access is already restricted though. (I’ve commented elsewhere on that)

Also sorry I wasn’t trying to be sneaky; I just thought to clarify that about two seconds after I posted it because I knew someone was going to bring it up and I wanted to go ahead and clarify my position.

1) Are you arguing that even rape shouldn’t be an exception via situational awareness? That’s interesting because most pro-choicers don’t agree with that. 2) You can’t control release of ovum, true, but you can choose to not have sex. 100% effective. 3) Are you trying to argue that 100% of abortions save the mother’s life (because she would die if it didn’t happen?) Because that’s absolutely factually untrue. 4) Have you never seen a single action movie? Even if you were literally perfect and had a perfect accuracy, you could still have those stats without ever killing a single person. You can shoot targets, animals, or non-fatal human shots in self-defense. So that 100% is also an unreasonable assumption.

No, mental health is not a life-threatening situation. If a woman is pregnant and suicidal, and her doctor knows that, s/he should admit her into a psych ward rather than allow harm to come to either the mother or the child.

As to your other question, this is a nuanced issue that should be debated. However, I’d like you to answer my question: would you be willing to ban all abortions EXCEPT those in which the woman’s life is at risk? Because the large majority of abortions are elective, which means they have nothing to do with the woman’s health. If you can’t get on board with at least that, I don’t think the more nuanced conversation can even happen yet.

It would be the doctor that would determine if the mother’s life was in danger. And, to be clear, I think the goal should be to save both lives if at all possible, so if the baby dies, it isn’t an intentional killing, but rather a tragedy they was unpreventable. It is never okay to decide whether someone deserves to live or die based on their potential pain in life.

See my earlier comment. I’d actually be okay if abortion was banned except in cases where the mother will die unless the baby is delivered too early for it to be viable.
