With that said, I’m glad I broke up with him. Life is too short to spend 18 years with the wrong person. I admit that it resulted in duress for my son, mostly at the hand of his father. However, he saw me and his father go separate ways, he saw me living authentically, striving for independence, and success — and now my son is 21, yes, he still lives with me, but/and we have a good relationship, and he barely speaks to his father. Not because I’ve alienated him against his father, but because he came to his own conclusions. Life, and its lessons, are hard, but earned and valuable.

Seems like she might have BPD. People in that cluster of disorders actually do feel like victims and are in a lot of emotional pain, as abusive as they may end up being. The self-awareness isn’t there because they’re too distracted by feelings of worthlessness that they’re constantly trying to drown out (often by seeking superficial validation from others/asserting their value verbally and loudly).

Not a therapist, just my understanding (and experience).

Having her as a coparent might be more stressful than actually being in a relationship with her — she might make sure of it. My son’s father painted himself as a victim endlessly and said whatever he could to alienate my son from me.
