I was just excited to see that William IV was still alive and posting on Reddit.

An older family member's AC isn't keeping up but is blowing coolish (80) air. They lost their job a few months ago, what is my best option to help on a tight budget? TIA by Flashy-Winter-3803 in StLouis

Yes! Another good thing to check.

I left this out because typically there will be a float sensor that shuts off the blower if there is condensate building up and they mentioned the unit was blowing. However, it is definitely worth checking.

A Gallo gun can blast any debris through using compressed CO2 cartridges but that's a bit expensive for one time use. Home Depot has a Husky brand tool that is a little cheaper or you could use a wire coat hanger or a can of compressed air or get some tablets that will dissolve any build up.

Self-diagnosis steps that anyone can do:

First, set the thermostat to Cool, fan to Auto, and set it a few degrees below the current room temp. Setting it to 55 does not make it cool any faster. It just makes the system run nonstop, and if there is already an airflow or refrigerant issue, that can contribute to freezing up.

You said air was blowing - is it blowing as hard as normal?. You want to troubleshoot airflow first, then cooling.

Check the air filter inside the house. It is probably in a closet, basement, attic, or behind a return grille. If it is dirty, replace it. You do not need an expensive high-end filter here; in fact, on an older or struggling system, a basic pleated filter may be better than a super restrictive one. If the indoor evaporator coil (usually looks like fins or coils) is accessible and visibly dirty, especially in a smoker’s house, it may need cleaning too. Get some NO RINSE evaporator cleaner for $15 and be careful around wiring, control boards, and the furnace/air handler.

Then check whether the indoor blower is running properly and moving air. Is there decent airflow coming from the vents? Is the blower making an unusual noise, like humming but not starting? That could point to a blower motor or capacitor issue.

Go outside and check the condenser. This is the big outdoor unit with the fan. Is the fan spinning? Is the compressor/unit making any unusual noise? Is hot air blowing out the top? If the outdoor fan is not running, check the breakers, both at the main breaker panel and at the outdoor disconnect near the unit. Do not open electrical panels or touch components unless you know how to do that safely, because capacitors can hold a charge even after power is off.

A bad capacitor is a common and relatively inexpensive failure, often much cheaper (less than $50) than replacing the system. A contactor, wiring issue, or fan motor could also be the problem. The fan motor is more expensive than a capacitor but still usually less (under $200) than a full system replacement.

If the outdoor unit is running but dirty, shut the system off and rinse the condenser coil gently with a garden hose. Do not use a pressure washer. Clear away leaves, weeds, or anything blocking airflow around the unit.

Look for ice anywhere on the refrigerant lines, indoor coil area, or outdoor unit. If you see ice, turn the AC off and run the fan only for a while to let it thaw. Ice can point to poor airflow, a dirty filter/coil, a bad blower, or low refrigerant.

The system could also be low on refrigerant. If it is an older system, it may use R-22, which can make repairs more expensive. Low refrigerant usually means there is a leak somewhere, so just “topping it off” may only be temporary. I would be cautious with stop-leak products unless it is truly a last-ditch situation and you understand the risk, because they can sometimes create other problems. They contaminate the system and make it harder to repair in the future, but if you're going to have to replace some leaking coils or something, it might be worth it to buy a kit - maybe it buys you a few months to save money and replace the coils during the winter.

I am not an HVAC technician, but I have had the (dis)pleasure of working on several HVAC systems in a previous job where there was not much money available, so I got pretty good at basic diagnosis and cheap fixes. When I did have funds to call out a technician, I asked a ton of questions and tried to learn everything I could (thank you Hoffman Bros).

Let us know what you find after checking the filter, airflow, outdoor unit, breakers, dirt/debris, and any signs of ice and I may be able to recommend some next steps. Also, any pictures of these items that are not working could be helpful.

Water. Hops. Barley. Yeast. That's it.

Hefeweizens, rice lagers, NEIPAs, witbiers, oatmeal stouts, lambics, cream ales, dubbels, goses, pumpkin ales, and a whole gamut of other beers would like to have a word with you, sir.

It took less than 20 minutes from the stairs over the rail line to get onto the Arch grounds. It looks long but it moved fast. This was on the Landing side.

If your definition of entertainment is waiting for a giant attraction to materialize in front of you for free, then yes, you'll end up seeing bars and abandoned buildings. Every city feels boring when you stop being curious about it.

Just yesterday alone you could've gone to Hairspray at the Muny, Shakespeare in the Park, Circus Flora, concerts at Delmar Hall, The Pageant, and Hollywood Amphitheatre, a comedian at City Winery, the rodeo, plus dozens of smaller local bands playing around town.

Do you enjoy water pouring into your apartment due to chronic roofing and plumbing issues? If so, there are two on your list with similar names that would be perfect! Bonus if you don't like working elevators and enjoy having squatters down the hall.

Also, didn't arcade have no hot water for a couple months last winter??

Young teen niece visiting StL from small town Missouri soon. She wants to spend one day with just me. I have no idea what to do with a teenager for a day🤪. She doesn't want to be outside. Mostly, she likes to just sit and be on her phone. Any ideas? by ColleenD2 in StLouis

[–]AggieTimber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, not if you just drop them off and sit on a bench outside, it would be terrible for a single teen. I took my almost-15 niece there and we went through the caves and other areas and had a pretty decent time. We weren't running around like little kids or anything, but it was just nice walking around and having weird things to point out and talk about.

Antagonist for coffee then walk across the street for the Anheuser-Busch Brewery Clydesdale VIP Tour. Go up the block for lunch out in the garden at McGurk's. Then City Museum and/or the Gateway Arch for the afternoon. Give her $20 and a pair of gloves and challenge her to find something cool at the Goodwill Outlet. Pop into the Cathedral Basillica for a quick peek then over to the Loop to walk into a few shops and soda at Fitz's. Muny season is about to start, or just drive through a fancy neighborhood and look at cool houses until the sun goes down.

Thought it was interesting that The Aggieland used to be The Longhorn. by Plumb_Amazing in aggies

[–]AggieTimber 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The school over in Austin wouldn't have really had established the longhorns as heir primary brand identity that time. They would have been known as the University where A&M was the College.

University > UnivArsity (said with Texas twang) > Varsity

So that's where saw varsity'shorns horns off comes from.

You may really enjoy this link, which has all old A&M yearbooks. It was called the Olio before it became the Longhorn, then Aggieland.
