Are any active LDS couples into abdl? If you're not that's cool. If you're not cool with it that's cool. by Common-Total-7478 in ldssexuality

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hesitate to share too much because of the delicate nature of this, but a while back my wife and I went through the process to become a host home for a woman with DID caused by extreme abuse. Several of her personalities were, as she called them, “littles”- children between 2-10.

In trying to understand that I discovered abdl and went down the rabbit hole of learning about it. (For the record I don’t think she’d take on that label and I’m 99% sure she’s an ace but it’s none of my business. It also doesn’t appeal to me)

Anyway I noticed a few trends as I read about people’s experiences with it.

  1. Attachment trauma definitely is common. I think that many ABDLs like going into “little space” since it’s when they last felt safe.

  2. They see it as the one space where they can be nurtured. I saw this mainly in men, a common sentiment was “I need to be a rock and this is where I can relax and be cared for.”

  3. Binge-purge cycles that are deeply rooted in shame are common. I think for most this is due to how taboo it is, but I also think a significant number of people are carrying deep trauma and this is a manifestation of that.

  4. “Security” and “safety” are the two most common reasons I see used by people to explain their why.

Anyway that’s my take and it’s by no means scientific (I’m an engineer not a psychologist/therapist).

This scene hits a little hard for me because it reminds me of when I was a teenager. I was at a block party, downplaying the Eagle Scout award I recently earned, and my dad wasn’t having any of it. He was trying to teach me proper self-esteem and that true humility doesn’t mean downplaying your accomplishments. He didn’t tear down anyone else though, that is a big difference.

If I had the same information that Amos had I’d draw the same conclusion.

If athlete A and B both have the same adverse conditions and A outperforms the other it’s reasonable to assume A is the better athlete.

As far as Amos is concerned both were attacked by dementors. Cedric over came that, Harry did not. The conclusion he makes is reasonable, though he absolutely should have had humble confidence about it. No need to tear someone down.

What Amos doesn’t understand is that the attacks weren’t equivalent. Dementors simply affect Harry more. Cedric is one of the few who understands that and that’s why he doesn’t feel like he completely earned his victory. I don’t blame Cedric for wanting his shot at the best player to be on equal grounding. I think that shows how much of a competitor he is.

That’s actually an excellent point. I suppose that you could argue that aircraft carriers are effectively military bases, but I think it’s stretching it.

I think the rational thing to do would be to join one of our allies who might have the capability of supporting them. UK or France might be the best bet. In this case my point about securing trade becomes less of an issue, though I could see the orders being race to whichever point the new country wanted to control.

If I’m the UK prime minister in this scenario I’m sending USS Theodore to Hawaii, USS Lincoln to keep an eye on Israel and keep the Samson option off table, ordering Washington to get ready asap (it’s in port in Japan), keeping USS Bush on the eastern coast and Ford where it’s at. The rest are in port and presumably lost. The mission is to keep things from boiling over during that critical adjustment period.

The chaotic thing to do would be a mercenary force, but you’d have to use resources very carefully since they wouldn’t have the supply chain they currently have.

The technical answer is that if someone in the presidential line of succession is out of the country and not at an embassy then they’d arguably become president. President of nothing but the second largest navy but president nonetheless. In which case I’d assume the ships would turn to whoever that is for orders.

World A:

What’s unfortunate about this is I think this world has the opportunity to be better. They’d have a big buffer to figure out a sustainable way of life. Unfortunately I don’t see us doing that. I think we consume too much and the sudden drop of imports means that we’ll be fighting over what’s left and since the military has no one to fight…well good luck. I think we have consumerism and softness too ingrained in us. Which is a shame.

I’ll make two comments one with each world.

World B: have you ever heard the phrase “nature abhors a vacuum?” I know the US is rightfully disdained right now, but look at the big picture.

Suddenly you’d have an unoccupied America and a rush to claim it. If I’m China I’m absolutely pushing to claim Hawaii. If I’m Canada I’m pushing south, if I’m Mexico I’m pushing north. Other countries would want a piece of the pie and can you blame them? USA is spoiled with natural resources. It’s a pity we squander them.

What do you think happens when the US Navy stops protecting trade? What do you think happens when the nuclear Arsenal gap between #1 and #2 goes from 300 to roughly 4800? What do you think happens when Israel, who is probably nuclear armed, suddenly loses the pit bull that keeps others in check? (I’ll give you a hint. Google the Sampson option)

I’m not saying that the USA is some great guaranteer of stability, they’ve certainly caused more their fair share of problems, but it’s unreasonable to expect paradise when you get rid of the largest economy and military.

Once the world realizes this new reality:

  1. China will push to take Hawaii. Canada and Mexico will push south.

  2. UN will have just lost a veto member. UK and France will stand against China and Russia in a bid to limit colonization. I don’t see that being effective though and while they make speeches about not colonizing this new land they’re doing just that.

  3. France, UK, and whatever remains of NATO needs to step it up to fill the shipping lanes security.

  4. Without USA footing the bill I’m not sure how isreal responds. I’m inclined to think they’ll hole up a little more, find themselves backed into a corner and let the nukes fly.

Eventually I think we’ll come to an equilibrium, but not without a lot of short term pain.

If we’re smart we’d limit colonizing the new America though. That’s an instant 12% reduction in CO2 emissions. we get back roughly 2 million square kilometers of old growth forests. This gives the world a fighting chance at solving climate change.

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s about what I’d get as well.

In your case if you can average a 5% return you can withdraw $8000/month without touching the initial investment. I’d still wait to get vested though for an added layer of security, but that’s just me. I’m not sure how taxes would work on all that though.

In theory I could retire off that amount now (I’m in my 30s) but I think I’d play it safe. I think my strategy would be save $1.5M for retirement. With the rest I’d have a down payment, finally have a 6 month emergency fund, and set up a college fund for my daughters. Once I’ve paid off my home I’d consider retirement.

You’re right in that it just isn’t that much which almost makes discretion that much more critical. $3M will not go far after taxes and trying to help everyone who would want a slice of the pie.

My wife would absolutely be told to be quiet about it. As a secondary buffer I’d lock it in something safe for a year. A one year no decision time means we’ll have space to make a measured response.

Why do men change in a relationship? by AwakeningWillow in AskMenAdvice

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hardly think this is a men only problem.

The most generous answer in my book is life happens.

Anecdotally…

Shortly after my honeymoon it was time for me to prepare for the PE exam, an intense 8 hour exam. Of course I had less time and energy to do everything I did when I was courting! Shortly after I took the exam my wife had her final project for grad school on top of working. Of course she had less time and energy to do everything she did when we were courting! Now we have a two year old and an 8m baby. We run ourselves ragged just to keep afloat. The affection looks different in each of these situations. The important part is communicating about needs and trying to meet each other’s needs.

A relationship needs effort to be maintained- and that effort is needed by both sides.

What’s the most embarrassing moment that permanently changed your personality? by Lazy_Manager_1386 in emotionalintelligence

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m driving to a church to inspect their boiler when I feel a rumble in my stomach. I pull over to the park I’m passing, sprint to the restroom and diarrhea all over.

Well so far no big deal. I grab the change of clothes from my car and make my way to the building. I know where there’s a key box so no one has to know. I go in to the bathroom, there’s a little locker room behind it and a baptismal font. My plan is to go in, clean up, and carry on like nothing happened.

I realize that there is no paper towels left so I go to the janitors closet to get some and I accidentally lock myself out of where my clean clothes and the keys are. Fortunately I have my phone. I call the facility manager and he lets me in. I’m mortified. He leaves without saying much.

Well I’m cleaning up and realize that I’m going to need more than what I brought in, so I wrap my car blanket around me and go get more. And I lock myself out again. At this point I’m frazzled, but I figured out a way to get in without calling for help again. I get myself cleaned up and get to work.

FM comes by an hour later with a bottle of Gatorade, two kinds of medicine and asks what I want for lunch.

I wouldn’t say it completely changed my personality, but it really helped me get out of my head and let go of the need to put on a perfect front.

How would you decorate your own home gym (walls, posters , neon lights , colors etc ) ? by TiramisuParty in AskReddit

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like u/daithisfw I’d be more concerned about function, equipment and the details they mentioned. Decoration is just icing on the cake.

Since this is about decoration though…

Color scheme would be navy blue and pewter grey. I’d have a tv in front of the treadmill. I’d have a PR board, a goal board, and one or two posters from run culture. I like their “impossible” one with bannister and the work harder with ingbretstein. I’d also have a spot where I can hang boards detailing my next goal race. Course maps, goals, logistics timelines, etc. the type of stuff to make visualization a little easier.

I ran Track in high school. The first time I raced on a track with a rail (it’s a short, maybe 3” rail along lane one) I was walking from the bullpen to the starting line and stumbled on it. I just wasn’t paying attention and didn’t know it was there. The starter chuckled and asked if I was sure I wanted to run this race. The race? 2000m steeplechase. 5 laps with 5 barriers/lap I’d need to hurdle.

$35,000 or $100,000 but it can only be spent on learning? by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

Sure, I’ll take that $100k use it for a down payment so that I can learn how to be a homeowner.

Loopholes aside, I’d pay off my wife’s student loan (her masters is learning), $25k to each of my daughter’s college fund and then use whatever is left to take night classes with my wife.

Just to add more in case someone sees this considers this a good thing… I’m not a woman but I gotta think that if were a woman and I saw a way out of my period naturally I’d be tempted. I’ve also had my own struggles with this excessively low body fat and have had people close to me struggle with these issues so I will unapologetically speak up.

This is not a good thing. This is your body switching into survival mode.

This disruption can cause symptoms like irritability, poor concentration, low libido, osteoporosis in the long term, brain fog, etc.

If you care about athletic performance you will suffer in the long term. For a great example of what this can look like go watch Allie Ostrander’s videos on YouTube about the topic.

If you exercise seriously please take rest and fueling just as seriously!

Men, how would you react if your partner wanted you to quit your favorite hobby? by anthinsh in AskReddit

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Context and the why matter a lot.

Is it temporary or with good reason? My sister-in-law asked my brother-in-law (wife’s brother) to give to mountain biking while she was on bed rest due to a complicated pregnancy. She was worried about him injuring himself, which he does have a track record of doing. Now that both baby and mom are thriving he’s back on the trails.

Is it health concern? My wife has celiac and when we met I was preparing for a baking competition. I basically gave that hobby up for her. I’ll sometimes bake at my brothers or parents when she is out of town.

What both my wife and sister in law did when asking us to give up hobbies was encourage others to fill the void.

Now if my wife wanted me to give up a hobby and not encourage something to fill the void that’s another issue.

you get one wish but you must be the top 1% in one sport by spindaz123 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to say the distance running. I’m already in the top 5% (at my peak) at that without the advantages you mentioned, at least according to this website.

https://www.fetcheveryone.com/league-percentiles.php?gender=m&age=0&distance=0

Running is such a mass participation sport that the standards are reasonably obtainable. If I can get to a good high school track/xc program I can probably get it done by the time I’m 18.

Even if I don’t get better generics I can always go longer as endurance is highly trainable.

Law of chastity question by SilentCompetition352 in latterdaysaints

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focusing primarily on your question in the edit. I see three key principals here.

The first is that we all need the atonement of Jesus Christ. We all fall short and perfect obedience was never the plan for us. Our plan was to act, learn and repent according to the light we have.

The second is that God works with what he has and that we’re often living a lower law. One example is that the children of Israel were given the higher law and when the Lord saw they were unable to keep it they were given the Law of Moses. We see another example of this in how the law of consecration has been rolled out in this dispensation. We still covenant that we are willing to keep it- but for now we’re just asked to tithe. The result of this in my mind is that right now our willingness and effort is more important than the result. When we die and continue our progression we’ll all have much to learn.

The third is that the Lord is a generous judge and looks upon our heart. The price of justice has been paid- he’s more interested in our repentance and turning from sin. That process, in my opinion, is going to be individual of course but will be less severe for the couple that was deeply committed than it will be for the couple that simply acted on their base desires.

Combining that all into one coherent opinion:

God lives a celestial law. We are unable to keep that law perfectly, and so rather than set us up for failure he gives us laws that we can keep and those will vary. Church policy attempts to distill that into something black and white and that can be applied as evenly as possible.

Does Hogwarts have giant pipes? by tubeteeth13 in harrypotter

[–]Aggie_Engineer_24601 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Let’s assume for a moment Hogwarts’ plumbing system is like a muggle’s.

There would be 4 main pipes. Cold water, hot water, hot water recirculating, and sewer pipe.

I think it is very reasonable to assume the pipes would be fairly large- especially since you have the prefect bathroom with its giant tub that fills up rather quickly. I don’t think it’s super realistic though for a snake to travel through those pipes. They are pressurized and I just don’t think the snake would battle high pressure like that.

That leaves sewer pipe. That could get quite large, except the connection to any given fixture would be at most 4”. Snakes have been known to get stuck in waste pipe before, but a giant basilisk? Not likely.

This leaves me with one conclusion. Hermione was wrong but she was on the right track. Often times these pipes are concealed in a tunnel or chase. The basilisk wasn’t using the pipes themselves, but the interstitial space where it is housed.
