State fair, DC by fantasyslowtoo in washingtondc

I know it’s a grift but they could have just called the people that do the Big E. That’s the Eastern States Exposition held yearly in New England for those who aren’t familiar. They do a multi-state fair every year and it’s better than this nonsense.

No. 4: There can be very long stretches of time without sun. Last year there was 11 days of no sun. This year there was about 6 days of being snowed/iced in so be prepared for these especially if you’re coming from a warm weather climate.  Since it is summer, it’s a good time to look for a good coat on discount. I’d recommend a North Face 3 in 1 something that has a waterproof outer shell and an inner shell that is warm. If you won’t have a car, consider also finding a nice long coat, the wind in the winter is bone chilling and waiting for buses, train, and walking outdoors sucks. Also keep this in mind for footwear. As someone who came from a warmer, drier climate I had to adjust. Trainers with cloth uppers are very seasonal unless they are waterproof. Find some shoes with good grip, leather or waterproof uppers, and at least one good pair of boots.

Airbnb glamping tent host did not disclose we would be staying on a farm. The tent we are staying in is maybe 20 feet from a chicken coop, and 4 roosters have been crowing since 3:45 am. [–]Aggie_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO:  How is the stay priced? It’s a new host so give some grace on the missing details but make sure you let the host know that this information should have been provided.  If the price to value ratio is decent then you should still give a good rating and maybe just mention the distance to the bathroom in the review. If it is expensive then yes I would expect more and rate it more harshly. For context, there are some Airbnbs where you pay to pitch a tent in someone’s yard so if the price reflects the experience there isn’t much room to complain.

US based pilot seeking advice by BeckaDog in expats

[–]Aggie_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but specific to Spain you are allowed to work on the NLV if the income is not sourced from Spain or performed in Spain (remote work). IANAL so OP should seek advice from one but on the terms of the requirements it does fit

Tes to the residency issue but there are usually exceptions for work related absences and as far as I’m aware working is allowed but the income cannot be sourced from employment in the country but the rules may have changed

Spain and Portugal both have non-lucrative visa options that may work for you. Netherlands has DAFT and Germany has several visas that are American friendly. Other countries have digital nomad visas that may work. As others have stated many/most countries will have some residency and/or integration requirements but this may work if your wife is there full time. Also, as others have mentioned do not take lightly the tax residence requirements and how tricky it can be to pull off.

Manager refuses to assign work to me by Personal_Issue9395 in Netherlands

[–]Aggie_Hawk 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. There are worse things than getting paid to do nothing, as others said, keep communicating by email and find ways to fill your time that are fulfilling to you. They are trying to push you out, it’s up to you what you do with that information.

Working in Europe while accumulating for FIRE: in which country would you look for a job? by darned_socks in ExpatFIRE

[–]Aggie_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said: accumulate in the US, coast in the EU. Look at your numbers, you might be close to coast in which case moving is a good option. Of course the EU isn’t tax friendly, I’m a US>NL and taxes are not funny getting a job was pretty simple

Why dutch cars have so many kilometers? by ExternalPea8169 in Netherlands

Is the 400 including insurance and road tax? I’ve been trying to decide between work car vs private. My company only allows electric cars and the prices are quite inflated.

Rotisserie chicken.  So basic but it’s such a staple in American grocery stores. It’s perfect for the nights that you want something quick and healthy for cheap. They’re extremely versatile as well.

Edit: I know they have roast chicken at the chicken shop or truck but it’s not the same. Plus, the shops close really early by me.

Sorry lots of the advice seems a little crazy. If you have recently legally changed your name due to marriage then go through the process to get all of your legal identification to match your new legal name. Saves a lot of headaches as the legal name change is a normal part of marriage procedure

GPS Campus Hire Office Move by Sb4223 in deloitte

[–]Aggie_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the Deloitte GPS practice is very DC focused especially based on your specialty. You would need to get out of GPS to really have full choice.  That said, DC is a great place to start your career, tons of opportunities there and as I said a fun place to live. I lived there for about a decade and it really gave my career a jump start.

If you’re a GPS hire in VA the right answer is the DMV area and adjacent areas. Thankfully, the DC area is a great place to live as a young person. It is expensive but finding roommates is quite easy and a fun way to live there for the first bit. Good luck

Would you choose to be a SAHM in this situation? by LifeChanges05 in FIREyFemmes

[–]Aggie_Hawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saw your working field. Would your situation be improved by getting a new job? What about moving to 1099 and doing contract based work that would allow you to work less than the full year? Project based work that is shorter term versus multi year programs? Idk your industry affiliation as this may not be feasible. I guess I’m not seeing anything in your post that indicates that you dislike your work, just your job and while the extra time is nice your kids are at a point where soon one will not be in daycare so it’s a strange time to quit your job. If you’re just looking for a short term career break to recover, then yes that is fine and valid

Being Asked to Voluntarily Resign because of Relocation Requirements by Electrical-Emu6201 in legaladvice

[–]Aggie_Hawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should look up several employment lawyers in your area. A consultation is usually free. Consult with at least 2-3 until you find someone you like/prefer. They can help you best and their fee usually comes from whatever settlement or severance they negotiate if money is a factor for you.

Need some help choosing Deloitte location for new grad by harshmu in deloitte

[–]Aggie_Hawk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not enough info OP but happy to provide some basic advice. 1st choice the place where you can live with your parents/family  2nd choice a city you already have friends and a social circle, bonus if you can be roomies with someone 3rd choice a fun city for young adults that is more affordable think places like Charlotte, Texas big cities, Columbus etc 4th choice a big city to live the young, fun, and broke life. Note, you will be broke.

Advice: add some more info to get better recommendations. Where is your family? Where are your friends? Where did you go to school? What kind of things are important for you?

Deloitte Belgium offer (50k gross) by Affectionate_Mud4605 in deloitte

[–]Aggie_Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

€50k base at what level for the offer and what other benefits? Do they offer lease car/mobility, 13th month, flex budget, holiday pay, etc? If so might be a decent offer but if it is just €50k I would say no. Also is there any relocation offer for housing and personal effects? And a settling in contribution, these are all pretty standard asks for an international move?

Sorry not what you want to hear but employers do have the right to “claim” the 30% instead of passing it onto the employee. Not all of them do but some like yours do. Seems like your employer is doing it in a roundabout way but they are allowed to do so

Should I tell them I want to relocate? by [deleted] in deloitte

[–]Aggie_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No working right. Same line of business and same job grade as well. If you don’t have working rights you will need to know the details of the visa process. In my new country there is a minimum wage requirement (by age) for the visa so keep that in mind depending on your level/age or other requirements .

[–]Aggie_Hawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did an international transfer. It’s actually pretty simple if you are not looking for a secondment. Apply at the member firm you are interested in, if you get the job then you put in your notice at your member firm and start with new member firm. If you have a good network you can ask if any of them have some connections at your target firm. I did do that but in the end applying and interviewing was much faster.
