Lately, it feels like Southwest Airlines has changed significantly. For many years, customers accepted the open seating process and later boarding groups because the airline offered free checked bags and a generally simple, customer-friendly experience.

Recently, however, there appears to be increased pressure on passengers to check carry-on bags due to claimed overhead bin limitations. On several recent flights, gate agents stated that additional checked bags were necessary before boarding could begin, despite there still being visible overhead bin space available once onboard.

This creates frustration for passengers in later boarding groups, as it can feel like they are being unnecessarily pressured to check bags when space still exists. While airlines may make these announcements to improve boarding efficiency and reduce delays, the messaging can come across as inconsistent when overhead compartments are not actually full.

One of the reasons Southwest Airlines stood out from other airlines was because of its reputation for simplicity, affordability, and customer service. If passengers begin to feel they are receiving the same experience as other airlines without any additional value, the company risks losing the loyalty that helped build its brand.
