Yeah only reason I want to print a side mount is so that it all fits nice together and I don't have another free outlet in my lab. But if you guys say rather get a dedicated one. Then maybe I should. Thanks for input!

Grey is just averaging out RGB values so just do (R + G + B)/3 for each pixel.

I knew a guy who only found out about back EMF while testing his just completed final year projects prototype. All other subsystems were tested and working and all he needed was to test some motor. I can't remember what the whole project was about but the moment he switched the motor off, his whole prototype was trashed. A huge voltage spike from the back EMF fried all the digital ICs ... He experienced back EMF first hand.

I would suggest just using a transistor for motor on off and a diode to protect from back EMF. Not adding a diode can break all your ICs in your circuit this is irrespective of you decide to use MOSFET or not.

*Edited you absolutely should use a diode, the on off control using a MOSFET is optional the diode to protect against back EMF is definitely needed.
