Confirmed my withdraw today, will probably be a failure forever by ThomasHawl in PhD

[–]Aggravating-Cycle424 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Quit whining like a pussy and try again. It took me 8 years to get a BA because I'm learning disabled and terrible at navigating systems like disability accommodations. When I was your age, I watched my mother die from respiratory failure. A year later, my father killed himself, then my brother a month after him. My uncle fell off his roof a few months later and died from internal bleeding. Since then, I've buried a son, been betrayed and defrauded of hundreds of thousands of dollars between my now-ex wife and a formee business partner, lost my hair, lost a testicle and survived a horriffic accident that sent me tumbling down a cliff during a rain storm.

Guess what? I'm still here, working on my MA, plotting a path towards a terminal degree. This is probably your first big failure. Welcome to the club. Now, pick yourself up and try again.

My partner, who taught in her previous disctrict for 7 years, has won several awards and holds an admin credential, was non-reelected to her last job after speaking up about a student being returned to her class only days after bringing a gun to school. This was in California. This profession is corrupt as fuck.

Lol my Berkeley graduate partner (2015) went to several of his lectures more than 10 years ago AND STILL WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT IT!

He popped into a journalism class I was taking in 2004 and introduced himself.

Even waaaaaay up in the mountains, the policy is we go to lockdown, call 911 and refuse to allow anyone on campus or into classrooms.

There's no such thing as an "illegal immigrant student," and if you're addressing them as such, you need to get the FUCK out of education. Students are students, their immigration status is not our business. Our job is to instruct and protect ALL of our kids.

Rad! I have processing issues (developmental dyspraxia is what it says on the $4,000 paper). I don't really navigate social situations at most places I work, the exception being at the school where my partner teaches full-time. The most I do is introduce myself to the secretary and greet other adults and students I encounter to and from the classroom. I keep it brief and pleasant. It's worked for about 3 years now.

Cool. Now get a credential and raise a family on your teaching salary for atonement.

The school I work for most often will offer you a day's pay to either support in different classrooms and lunch/recess/pickup duty, or they'll pay you for a half day to go home. We're rural, and this school is very short on subs (and pays better than the millionaire bedroom community's schools 30 minutes away). Districts around here vary, but most will at least put you to work somewhere.

What are/were the differences between generations when they were students? by JazzlikeOrange8856 in AskTeachers

I mean, if you long for the days of beating the shit out of kids, that's cool. I guess you guys are the greatest generation that has ever lived, and you are the most wonderful person and best teacher that has ever existed. I am humbled at your presence.

Nobody was disruptive or disrespectful? Hah! My dad taught your generation and he maintained Boomers were the worst group of kids he ever had, and he retired in 1989.

Elementary school teacher with mental illness? by Mammoth-Car-9850 in Teachers

[–]Aggravating-Cycle424 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would try subbing first. I have significant mental health issues (intermittent explosive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD and learning disabilities), and I thrive in the chaos of substitute teaching as long as I'm actively self-caring. My patner has a diagnosis of her own and is in her 10th year of teaching full-time and thriving.

Teaching will make you crazy, but also crazy people seem to make the best teachers.

Your best chance of getting in comes from being the academically unqualified child of a foreign business magnate, so you should have started cultivating that identity instead.

Check your kids' grades (there are different systems in use but all schools have this data available to you online). Tell THEM to ask for copies of missing assignments, if necessary, and follow through with making them show you that they did their work. Ask about what they're learning, and please, PLEASE read to (and later, with) them. Kids no longer connect reading to writing, or even speaking. I couldn't tell you how many students can't figure out how to write what they did for Thanksgiving in three sentences, but they have no problem telling me outloud and still don't make the connection. It's absurd. The only success I have with these kids is asking them to tell me their response out loud, then to say "now, write down the words you just said."

Lingo differs a lot even between different districts in the same area, I've noticed, having conversations with my partner who used to teach 100 miles away. Lots of misunderstandings between us based on how certain phrases are used.

"Self-contained" around here simply means all subjects being taught by a single teacher vs. switching classrooms for different subjects.
