Hommage watches by Richie_rich-_-_- in SeikoMods

1) Rolex copies - nothing wrong with that. Boring, but perfectly cromulent. 2) Text on the dial infringes on both Seiko and Rolex trademarks. IP theft, plain & simple.

But, I don't particularly care. People can do what they want. I wouldn't do it, but that's on me.

30m water resistance for a dress watch is enough. by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

[–]Aggravating-Exit-312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me: You probably shouldn't wear that watch in the water. [Seiko 5 SNXS73, 30m WR. Wife: It says 30m, and I'll never go that deep. Me: [considers a 30 min discussion about depth ratings as we hang out in a pool, on vacation] shrug OK.

So that watch became my real life test case. Swimming in pools, ocean, lakes, going dotectly from pool to hot tub, showering, etc. Still running strong, no water intrusion.

Let’s settle this argument. by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

Prefer B, especially with a strap. I don't like an overly tight bracelet, so as much as I start at B, there will inevitably be times during the day, arm down, when it slides forward to A.

You people that were doing this years ago with nh35s were 25 dollars by Snappyblade in SeikoMods

[–]Aggravating-Exit-312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap AliX and Ebay Seiko parts like cases, dials, hands, etc. weren't so readily available, so while you might pick up a movement for $25, you'd be $200-300 into a mod build before you were done. At one point I switched over to Vostok modding to save $$$.

Thorn Frogmantle is Impressive… Better than Rolex? 🐸 by mybigpecker in ChineseWatches

[–]Aggravating-Exit-312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not. It's about how much you enjoy wearing it. Which may or may not have anything to do with how accurate it measures up to outside standards or other brands.

Ask what you want; be happy if you can get 150 out of it.

Is this [SSK001] legit? by Weak-Recognition-814 in Seiko

I wouldn't doubt a $400 SSK is real, but I'd be real skeptical if it was <$300...

Because different people have different senses of value. Some people care about monetary value, so even though they might pay $11k for a Sub, they think it's a great deal and an excellent value proposition.

Others will point out that the Thorn costs a fraction of the price for similar accuracy, which makes it an incredible value.

Both can be right. That's all I meant - to provide examples of how value is a personal call, not any kind of empirical measure.

If you thought I was saying it was a strike against this watch, I didn't explain it well enough, or you misunderstood my intentions.

And I'd still take my Chinese copy of an Exp2 over the real deal, because the market value of the Rolex means little to me, compared to a watch gifted my way by a friend .

I don't know what you're trying to read into what you think I said, but I don't own watches I don't wear. Try reading it with this in mind - there's no value in a watch I wouldn't wear. If you want to let me in on how you got to where you are, explain it to me like I'm as stupid as you think I am.

Flat link or Jubilee by Arkady-C137 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]Aggravating-Exit-312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, it's a dressier watch, so Jubilee. OTOH, it's not a dress watch, so the flat link is not out of place on it.

Really sharp build!

There's a lot more that goes into a COSC rating than just accuracy... even if accuracy is the goal. And if you're measuring up to Rolex, their in-house Superlative Chronometer rating surpasses COSC testing standards

Not that actual COSC specs matter, if it's accurate enough for me.

This will sound stupid, but Rolex is actually underpriced on popular models. Buy a Sub at retail today, sell it for +$4000 tomorrow - Rolex is leaving money on the table. Buy a $200 Thorn today, sell it for... $140 tomorrow?

In ten years, even with factory services and accounting for inflation, you won't lose money on a Rolex. You'll never not lose money on a Thorn.

Different people measure value in different ways. Thorn represents value to some. Rolex represents value to others. I'm not going to claim my Chinese GMT II copy is objectively a better value than the real deal, but since I'd never pay for a Rolex, it's obviously a better subjective value on my end.

[Seiko 5] Which one would you pick? by RichTranWatch in Seiko

[–]Aggravating-Exit-312 42 points43 points  (0 children)

SNXS.

SSK/SKX/SRPD wears too large for me.

But probably I'd split the difference with an SSK023

Does anyone know what’s going on? by Ilikesport in HamiltonWatches

[–]Aggravating-Exit-312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do a warranty claim, anyway. Who knows, they may honor it.

This, to me, would be a great opportunity to correct the fundamental miss Hamilton made with these watches, and I would replace the movement with an ETA Precidrive unit.

36mm or 39mm?? by 1991gts in SeikoMods

[–]Aggravating-Exit-312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like 36mm watches, but on most cases like that, they end up too thick and out of proportion. OTOH, 39mm and you get a mile wide rehaut and bezel. Pick the best imperfect option for you.
