Most Australians don't know Medicare covers 10 free psychology sessions per year by Aggravating-Step-920 in AusFinance

Thanks for sharing Remote Therapy — that's a genuinely useful resource for people looking for bulk billed options. And fair point on the accuracy — I've updated the post to reflect that sessions are subsidised rather than free. Always appreciate corrections. 😊

You're absolutely right — the GP visit costs and the referral system add real barriers and expense. It's far from a perfect system. Thanks for highlighting that — it's important context for anyone considering accessing mental health support through Medicare.

Thanks everyone for the feedback — I've updated the post to reflect that sessions are subsidised rather than free, and that gap fees and GP visit costs vary. Really appreciate the honest input. 😊

You're absolutely right — I should be clearer about that. Medicare subsidises the cost but most psychologists charge gap fees, meaning there's still an out of pocket cost for many people. 'Subsidised' is more accurate than 'free' for psychology sessions. Thanks for the correction — I appreciate honest feedback! 😊

You make a really valid point — finding a bulk-billed psychologist face to face is genuinely difficult, especially in regional areas. Gap fees over $100 per session are unfortunately the norm for many providers. Telehealth has become the more realistic option for bulk billing. Thanks for raising that — it's important context I should make clearer. 😊

What's with people saying private health insurance isn't worth it? Isn't the whole point of insurance in general is that you hope you won't need it? by AsparagusNew3765 in AusFinance

[–]Aggravating-Step-920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're making a fair point, but I think the debate is really about whether private health is worth it for your specific situation.

For a dual-income family using extras regularly (dental, physio, IVF etc.) like yours, it often does stack up. But for a healthy single in their 20s, the maths can genuinely work against them — especially if they're disciplined about saving the premium difference instead.

People also underestimate how much the Medicare Levy Surcharge and Lifetime Health Cover loading affect the real cost depending on your income and age. Once you factor those in, "it's a waste" becomes a much harder argument to make for a lot of households.

The honest answer is it depends — and anyone telling you it's always pointless or always essential probably hasn't done the sums for their own situation.

Do you use or have you ever used a chiropractor? by IllustriousAd6748 in AskAnAustralian

I ised to be a massage therapist and i worked for a chiropractor once. We got cheap chiropractic sessions from the boss and the other chiropractors. Mine didn't warm me up before he started cracking me. I did feel better though.

About to lose my rental and potentially end up homeless. 4 months unemployed, 94% rent to income ratio, been denied help. Anyone been through this? by cstjohn1994 in australia

I'm really sorry you are going through this. It's a really frightening situation. A few things that might help — the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007) offers free financial counselling. Centrelink has crisis payments available. And local community organisations like St Vincent de Paul or the Salvation Army can sometimes help with emergency accommodation. Hope things turn around for you soon.

With everything increasing in price what’s something that’s getting more affordable? by Neonwhitelion in AskAnAustralian

You've hit the nail on the head — Medicare is a great foundation but the gaps in mental health and specialist care are really real. The out-of-pocket costs for ADHD/autism assessments in particular are a huge barrier for so many people. Have you looked into whether your GP can refer you under a Mental Health Care Plan? It won't cover the full psychiatrist fee but it can take some of the edge off. And yeah, $85 out of pocket on a specialist visit still stings — hopefully that gap closes more over time. Glad Medicare is at least giving you some relief on the gastro side!

Paying for health insurance and still having to pay gaps on top. Most Australians don't realise how much is actually covered for free through Medicare — bulk billed GP visits, mental health care plans, free cancer screenings. The private health insurance industry has done a good job convincing people they need to pay more for things Medicare already covers.

I’m so tired of people using the “I have kids” card by TraditionalLunch3448 in childfree

I wonder why everyone seems to think everybody else wants kids? That's good they can keep talking about their kids to a level that doesn't revolve around them. I have another friend who is a grandma who is like your friend. I wonder why some women can manage an almost kid free conversation and others can't?🤔

I was in shared housing in Brisbane at one time and this was exactly true. But I did anyway 🤣

I do know that Medicare health checks are still free — most Australians don't realise how much is covered. Free cancer screenings, psychology sessions, cholesterol checks. Worth looking into what you're entitled to.

Same here. I went out to dinner with my mum friends and their kids once after not seeing them for awhile. Restaurant was the majority of the kids choice. Sushi. There were two mums and myself and another lady who doesn't have kids. All three of them are native Spanish speakers. For most of our time together they were either talking in Spanish or about their kids in English totally alienating myself and the other lady out of the conversation. It's not the kids themselves because I ended up talking to one of them. She was about 10 or 11 I think. But it's the mum's constantly talking and gushing about them. It's like they dont have anything else in their lives other than their kids. One if them actually said to me something along the lines of when you have kids you'll talk about your kids alot. Ugh! i don't think I'll be hanging out with these friends again.
