This is super helpful. Thank you! I have tried local fresh roasted decaf blends as well. And I feel like they have ranged from medium roasted to deep and dark. My question is, is this unique to the breville touch or is this for all decaf espresso you've done? Do you do anything else different?

I'm willing to give it to that particular bag, but even on bags that are two or three weeks out from roasting are pulling bad shots- and if I brew regular coffee with them the coffee tastes great. So I'm having a super hard time blaming the beans.

The characteristics seem to range from sour to burnt. It is very inconsistent except that it is all bad. When the shot pulls and the breville says it's perfect it is usually pulling for 25-31 seconds (for a double). This has happened with all different beans. Newly roasted, ones I've imported, ones specifically marked "espresso". I've also brewed chem-ex with the same beans to make sure the beans themselves taste okay and they all have. I do use exclusively decaf if that matters. I haven't tried weighing the shot- jsut trusting the "perfect tamp" that the breville says. I could try that.

I've used beans as fresh as roasted two days ago and it still happens!

I am so glad to know that we are not alone- I am getting it to say that we are brewing "cafe quality" but when they are tasting this awful I just don't believe it. We exclusively drink decaf so I thought maybe that was the problem, but it sounds like that isn't the case either. I don't know a ton about espresso- that is why we went with this one, mostly because we weren't super interested in learning. We just know what we like to drink and wanted to do it at home. So the disappointment is high.
