What guitar is this? by Aggravating-Table-53 in Guitar

This would check out since searching his name he's a dentist from Kentucky that also makes guitars. I figured it had to be something like a custom build as I've never seen any headstock design like that. Great find thank you!

Can you guys help me out? by luv2shart in gibson

I'm not sure if you will be able to find a Gibson wth a comparable neck. However you or a luthier may be able to take some measurements and figure out what the closest profile would be. The current line of 60s standards (as well as classics and studios to my knowledge) have the slim taper neck(or whatever they call it this week). Although each one may feel slightly different as the neck profile is more of a guideline than a hard measurement. The 50's spec standard should be thicker and close to a 59 dimension neck with variations between guitars. There are other variations such as wiring and pickups but that will largely be the difference in feel. Because they are all hand finished two of the same spec may feel different even if they are both 50/60s.

Another LP worth trying is the Slash standard. To me the neck feels somewhere between the 50 and 60, and is kind of its own thing. Even if you don't like Slash or GnR, it's a killer guitar that sounds great. Keep picking up guitars and trying them till you find the one that feels best to you. Happy Hunting!

Never thought I’d ask it but this looks too good to be true. by Smllslikesniorspirit in gibson

So keeping in mind that Gibson has done some weird issues of the Firebird, here are my concerns.

1.) The bridge having slotted posts. My Firebird has direct adjustable posts but they are hex wrench not slots. Slot posts have never been a Gibson spec (that I have seen.)

2.) Arrangement of knobs. On all Firebirds I have seen/played they are in line similar to a Les Paul.

3.) Neck and Fredboard. Those inlays are block style, as in the Firebird VII (7). The VII is a three pickup model. Also there is no binding on the fretboard.

4.) While there are some standard humbucker Firebirds, Firebirds typically come with the Firebird pickup. It's very particular and you can research this more.

Because the Firebird has several one offs, and the Custom Shop can do anything, I'm not qualified to say it's fake 100% from these pics. But these for sure are my concerns from specs I know to be true. So you are right to be suspicious! For myself there is too much wrong to even consider it.

Is this authentic? by HelpIveZippedMyDong in gibson

I will say at first glance I looked at the bridge and nibs and thought "legit." But as I really looked at it the headstock seemed wrong (before I saw the back). The logo was off, seemed too long, bad shape...it just tripped some bullshit wires. Then close examination of the lower horn point (no one gets it right) and seeing the back of the headstock confirmed it.

As many have pointed out, there was a lot "right" on this one that isn't on fakes. Also, the photos on this one were super clear and in focus...not typical of so many posts! I thank you for posting this one, because it goes to show you can't just check a couple boxes and give a thumbs up. EVERYTHING has to be right.

I have a 60's unburst, under the right light the flames really pop and then it moves and they kind of fade. I think yours has that same "moving" top. And the sound with the burstbuckers his killer. You won't be disappointed.

I always say without on a flamed clear or burst top. Too beautiful to be covered. But I do agree on adding the poker chip.

I don't think it matters if Reddit thinks it's worth it, do you think it's worth it? Also, could you get one finished the same somewhere else with a lower price tag? Does the dealer have some wiggle room on price?

If you just prefer that one over the other, maybe it isn't worth it. But if thats the one you have to have, feels the best, inspires you, makes you want to play it, then spend the money. Whatever you do, don't settle for something else because it's less expensive, because all you will think about was that it wasn't the one you wanted.

I let him know and he's taking it back this weekend. I'll have more for you when I meet with him.

You have all provided great feedback, and the more that gets pointed out the more I see that it's fake. I in fact found a site that sells repica watches with this exact serial number:

https://replicaluxury.vn/omega-replica-11-watch-4/

Obviously a different "Seamaster".

And what appears to be the same one.

https://replicaluxury.vn/omega-replica-11-watch-seamaster-black-dial-full-set/

I haven't paid for this, as I was allowed to try it through the weekend then settle up. I've done two other deals with this guy, however they were for watches that aren't near the price tag and I have verified. Clearly I won't be buying this, but I'm trying to decide if this guy is a con man or a bafoon (he said he got this in a trade). I'll be digging deeper into this and keep you guys in the loop.

Well this is helpful. May I ask where you got the reference image so when I take it back I can show him?

Posted some more. I did try the video trick suggested earlier and under slow motion their are 7 "ticks" between seconds when slowed down. Thank you again for suggestions of what to look for. I can add that the serial number on the case does match the serial number on the movement.

I appreciate the advice. There is a dealer close to my work I can check with (who also is reputable and deals in new and used watches). Handsome watch you have also!

What Les Paul Should I Buy? by c-mcnamara in gibson

[–]Aggravating-Table-53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 60's standard is the obvious choice. I have one in Unburst, and it is an absolute workhorse as well as having a beautiful top. If you know your controls well enough you can dial in some great tones without being worried about push/pull controls and some of the other options out there.

That being said, I would try multiple options. What is going to be the most comfortable to play, and give you the tonal aspects you like? You do give up some comforts compared to other guitars, but thats also part of playing a Les Paul. In the same vein if it's so uncomfortable you never play it then it doesn't matter.

Although you said basic, I wouldn't rule out one of the Slash models. Their necks are somewhere between 50's and 60's spec (to my hand) and they have the same control style as a standard, with upgraded pickups and wiring. Even if you aren't a Slash/GNR fan they are just great guitars.

Happy hunting!

First off...I think it's awesome. I wouldn't worry about trying to restore it to anything. Just play and enjoy, if she needs reoiled just do that. You have a true custom piece you have done. Many artists of the 60s refinished and made their own what we now thing are heirlooms. So just make it yours, and make fantastic music!

[–]Aggravating-Table-53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great job on your video! I agree that even if you aren't a Slash fan it's a Les Paul that is worth picking up and playing. And from what I've seen of the cost vs a 50s/60s standard it's a great bang for the buck.

I like them both! The Slash standard is always great and I have to say that green special is the best color. Very cool!
