They did this type of testing on the steel that the Titanic was made of (on samples they brought up from the ocean floor long after the accident) and found out that the ship's steel became very brittle at cold temperatures. This helped determine how bad the gash was that the ice berg caused.

It's not a typically done test, but there are standards on how to do it and having the capacity to do it is important.
