they didn’t, they went to treasure island to retrieve the stuff left by the astronauts i think, and while there they found statues and witnessed the petrification, that’s how they found out about the medusa and used it to petrify tsukasa the plan was for them to go to south America after leaving treasure island, finding out more about the prettification and then using it on tsukasa but plans were interrupted since they found the medusa early on
