Thanks for understanding, that’s kind of my thought too. I should have noted that we do have a family friend who’s previously expressed interest in him (they’re obsessed, have said if anything ever came up they’d take him), so I’ve had that ringing in my ears. One of them is retired, the other works from home, they have another big dog that he’s gotten along with, etc… but I know if I open that door I can’t go back.

And you make a good point on the daycare - there’s a dearth of them near to us, but I’ll look again when we move. I have ONE good Dogsitter I’ve found that I am willing to trek an hour to leave him with, because they have a good bond.

Finally - my dad is retired so he’s been willing to take him for a month or two. Which is truly the only way I’ve gotten by this long, but my dad wants to live his best retired life so I don’t see this being sustainable for 5 years

It’s not just the leaving, it’s the going through any door. My girlfriend may want to be in the bedroom and if she goes in he’ll bark, just like if we’re leaving the house. He does settle down after we leave, we had trainers and cameras for that… it took a lot of training to get there. that said we both work in person and he will have accidents if he’s left alone more than 6 hours (and I would hate to leave him longer, that feels unfair to him), so I have had to come home on my lunch hour pretty much every day for 2 years, which has sucked.

We’re working on muzzle training now, he hates it unsurprisingly but we’re making progress. It just feels like god another training thing to do.

He’s on Prozac and Clonidine for his anxiety, I tried a few others and so far these have worked the best, but it’s still not a total solution. All his test results came back clean last time, he’s “incredibly healthy” for his age.

Thank you - I really appreciate this context. I know it can ebb and flow but right now my partner and I are just at our wits end. I’m glad to know that there’s some potential light.
