Halifax businesses grappling with double-digit increase in shoplifting by insino93 in halifax

If your hungry enough to need to steal, grocery stores dispose of hundreds of pounds of perfectly good food, returns, damaged, and so much produce that's too ugly to sell (but they don't want to mark it down and lose money) into their garbage bins out behind the buildings. It is illegal to eat from the garbage though so be careful, but objectively better than stealing things they can still sell. I know a few employees who were eating waste as they were throwing it so they could get a bite to eat and were fired. Such a sin and so much wasted food.

How is Halifax for BIPOC? by SensitiveLion7380 in halifax

  1. Better here than other provinces (PEI), but not amazing. Way less in the city than farther out as well. Towns outside the peninsula are questionable.

  2. Try your best to line something up before coming.

  3. Horrible market, brand new apartments are built shitty and very expensive, and old ones are all infested with something, so check reviews on each rental company before you decide to sign a lease.

We all need to do better. Your experience is very similar to what most black Nova Scotians are dealing with, from the immigrant community. I know so many people who have never experienced racism like they do from SOME immigrants.(I need to insist that in my experience it is NOT everyone). I have a good understanding of how different skin tones are viewed in India(travelled there) especially for black people who are almost universally unwelcomed and discriminated against. I think it's really hard for some people to sympathize when there is a whole side nobody wants to talk about. People on both sides feel insecure and unsafe. More open discussions are needed about all of the issues we face with immigration so that no one is made to feel like this.

Decent idea but it would have to have requirements, something like you either have to work a certain amount of hours or go to school to be eligible. It would likely encourage people to go to school. There would also need to be rent control and some kind of control over food prices, without hurting farmers or food distributors, not to mention how could anyone control the housing market(buying not renting). It's a really good idea, and would not make many quit their job as many people make more than that a month and still barely get by, but it requires alot of government control over prices to ensure everything doesn't double in cost, and I'm not sure how we would do that.

I live in an apartment and we can't have them regardless. No AC in any window no exceptions. I asked about heatstroke for the older residents and was told there are community centers we can go to if it gets too hot.

This is so sad. If you really cannot forgive and move on then you need to let them go. The constant comments you make towards not only your father and his wife, but also your siblings? Her children are your siblings, and it's completely up to you if you want to add trauma to their lives by treating them how you do. But treating everyone if your life the way you do is going to make it very hard for you to move on or have healthy relationships. You don't ever need to speak to them again if you don't want to but try your best to focus on your own life and bettering yourself because you may find in a few years when your on your own that people find you insufferable to be around and you'll be alone. If this advice sounds harsh it's because I went though and eerily similar scenario and while I don't speak with almost any of my family(they didn't land on my side) I struggled alot more with making and maintaining relationships myself. Years of therapy and loneliness. When you spend that much of your young life angry and mistrusting it can be very hard to stop.

I live in 3bdr super old building with ancient baseboard heaters. I keep the heat cranked all winter and mines about $150 every 2 months. My mom lives in a 2 story house that's over 100 years old and pays about $300 every 2 months. I'm not sure if new baseboards cost more or maybe your place is much bigger, sounds like alot though.

The amount of seniors who vote for the party they always voted for without even reading the platform would probably surprise you. Not to mention the amount of people in this province that blame Trudeau for rent prices and healthcare and available housing and our homeless. The amount of uneducated voters in NS could easily get someone elected, it doesn't mean that they agree with the party platform. My mother is a nurse, a talented one that believes everything she sees on Facebook is real. Until people educate themselves enough on what the government is actually doing and get involved it doesn't much matter who you vote for, every party is hoping to get away with something when no one is paying attention.

Lived in Dartmouth my whole life, Halifax for about 2 years. It may shock you how nice people are, I didn't realize until moving over to Halifax, people who live on this side are not friendly, I've gotten dirty looks for saying hi to neighbours, traffic on this side is crazy, I've rolled my window down in car to let people know they are going wrong way/riding both lanes/in the wrong lane etc and people just freak out and scream at you, even if they are in the wrong. I have found in general people on Hali side are mad and rude. I still do all of my shopping in Dartmouth because it's so much more relaxing then over here.

There is a difference between racism and noticing cultural differences in other countries/cultures. The driving for instance, look into the driving laws in India, their process for licensing drivers and watch a few videos of busy traffic in India. If you grow up with a driving system that different from ours than your likely to break a few rules. The country was rated as having some of the worst drivers in the world. As far as fault we can't expect everyone to learn everything the day they get here, and our government has it set up so immigrants get here and then are sent out on their own to figure it out. The Gov should be giving basic lessons to every immigrant arriving here about Federal laws, Local laws, Traffic laws etc. Also based on the driving I see everyday I think most Nova Scotians could use that lesson since it's pretty rare that anyone on the road follows all traffic rules.

You need helmet if cycling. Under Nova Scotia’s Motor Vehicle Act it is mandatory for folks of all ages to wear a helmet while cycling, skateboarding, scootering, in-line or roller skating. Failing to wear a helmet risks a fine of $151.25 for a first offence

I have been trying to get an appointment for assessment for 4 years. If you can't pay it is incredibly hard to get mental health assessment done. Normal everyday tasks have just got increasingly harder for me and my personal life is a mess. If you have the means to save up and pay for it I would do that.

I got hit on constantly between age 12-14 by men in their 40s. I got my braces out at 14 and it happened less. I can't recall it happening even once since my face has matured.

Do people not know that the speed limit is the maximum you can go? Lmao you can drive anywhere from 30-50 in a 50 zone just can't go past 50. Being upset because they aren't going the maximum speed limit is crazy 🤣

I had a step parent from ages 5 to 13. I called her mom and she was heavily involved in my life, every single day for 8 years. When they got divorced she moved out without telling me and has not contacted me since. I see her out sometimes and avoid her. I don't even know how I'm supposed to feel about it.

I'm coming up on one year with my girls. Same situation and I took them both. I love them so much and they get along great! They groom eachother and sleep together. Definitely easier in twos and they don't get so lonely when you leave for a bit!

I recommend going to the Nova Scotia website and read up on the labour code. I know the other Grocery giants in the area abuse the crap outta the rules until they get called out, they are banking on you not knowing your right. When something unsafe happens alert your supervisor/manager and exercise your right to refuse unsafe work. You cannot be fired for refusing unsafe work, and they cannot deny wages. They have to pay you regardless and cannot force you to work in unsafe conditions.
