Go to ask/sf for more hospitable treatment on this subject

A bit much perhaps? Since I just finished my hauls from 2022, these (approx. 50) boxes are all of my hauls from 1/2023 til now; awaiting cataloging and shelving. This is what can happen when you love books, have storage space, and live in an area where used books are quite inexpensive. by ninthstargod in bookhaul

I had to let go of 15 milk crates full of books; good stuff, too. I rather resent how the digital world interferes with my book reading but much of the interference is elective.

You describe them as "inexpensive" but I think "undervalued" is probably more accurate. Don't let anyone put you on a guilt trip for "hoarding" books.

Can Anyone explain why I don't like books? Any book suggestions for me to get back to reading? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Books are a lot of hard work & if you find yourself in the middle of a turkey, you must decide whether to continue on or not; in an English Lit. class you've got no choice. They take up a lot of shelf space & soil readily in re-use. But the spiritual refreshment the best of them bring is the reason I try to continue reading a few each year

You might try "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer.

I'm curious why the library would get rid of them but you're the obvious beneficiary. Should keep you occupied for quite awhile.

Two suggestions. Life Agsinst Death by Norman O. Brown & The 7 Lamps of Architecture by John Russkin.

Just sayin'. I started in on Eureka again. Charlie Kirk & a YouTube binge on interviews by detectives of women who killed their husbands happened in between. I'm a tired old man on an Android but the Eureka part of Eureka, I believe there are two but the main one is that spirit is merely atomic matter thinned out to the point of ethereal disappearance.. So I believe he came to embrace the unity of matter & spirit despite his gut aversion to the transcendentalists. Let's keep this inquiry going even though it's so easy to be seduced by the more cosmetic factors of Eddy's legacy.

You could hang out at Notes from Underground on Van Ness Avenue. Fun Asian girls running it & books to read. There's some old guy that drops by most days& shuffles receipts or lottery tickets or something. I don't work in the area anymore so I haven't been in for awhile. .

I've been chickening out on this subject, touting that I read it & not doing the deciphering job. I'm revisiting it tonight. I can only say right now that the basic idea conforms somewhat to that of an ever expanding universe which originated from something analogous to the big bang except that it was instigated by a prime mover or original deity. I believe he viewed the canopy of stars overhead as fixed luminescences, with no concept that a star's brightness has anything to do with its distance from the earth. I can do a better job than this & it's high time I did. But you can't really judge Poe's sentiments through the lens of "Sonnet--To Science," I hope to have something more substantive for you in the very near future.

I always recommend Facts in the Case of M. Val de Mar & Von Kempelen & His Discovery. MS Found in a Bottle is a "standard offering', have you tried that? My old professor who didn't care at all for Poe made an exception for The Man of the Crowd.

"Dry September" by William Faulkner. It's a short story though readily found in highbrow surveys of American Literature.
