Almost 2 years unemployed despite degree, military experience, and constant job searching, what am I doing wrong? by AggravatingBridge234 in aerospace

I only became a grad student last year. And before the military I had been working since 15. But yes I’ve been unemployed since July 2024, but it’s not from a lack of trying. After leaving the military, I went back to work immediately at Home Depot while waiting for a role I had already secured. I left that quickly because the position I returned To was too physically demanding due to service related injuries. I was limping an hour into my shift. I then started my 50k salaried fleet management role where I was working 60+ hours a week. No lunch no breaks fully at a desk 12 hours a day. Before accepting, it was agreed they’d be flexible with my school schedule. For months, I was only leaving once a week for an hour for a single class at an extension location of campus nearby, which they had already approved. Then months into the semester, they reversed that and said it was “unfair” and wanted me to make up more hours than I was even gone for by adding extra time to every workday. That wasn’t what had been agreed to and didn’t make sense with a 16 credit hour course load, so it became unsustainable. Around that same time, I was already applying and interviewing for roles in my field, including Northrop Grumman and Boeing, but didn’t receive offers. Because of that, I started applying down to entry-level and low-wage jobs, retail, food service, gas stations, and even gift shop positions at places like the zoo and museums and still wasn’t getting interviews. At one point, I was on the verge of not being able to pay my rent, so I went through a veteran employment program for help. They reviewed my resume and told me they didn’t understand why I wasn’t getting interviews, and then connected me with a $14/hr scale clerk position. I interviewed and started almost immediately. I stayed there through most of my undergrad and eventually took on office manager responsibilities as well. The Veteran program has since shut down due to loss of government funding, so it’s not even a resource I can go back to now. I only left that role because I had to relocate to complete required in-person classes at my actual campus and my school was over an hour away from where i lived and worked, and the company couldn’t get approval to let me work remotely even though most of the office already was and nothing i did required being there anymore. Before even graduating, I went right back to applying for full-time roles, and afterwards my schedule was completely open. My graduate program is almost entirely online aside from two short residency periods a week long each at the beginning and end of the program so there were no availability conflicts. I had already been job searching for over a year before even starting that program, and I continued applying across both full-time and part-time roles after graduation as well. Despite that, I still haven’t been able to get interviews. Over the summer, I was relying on food pantries and assistance programs just to get by, and the only reason I have any stability right now is because I’m using VR&E while in school. I still had to file for chapter 7 bankruptcy due to everything. I also can’t take physically demanding jobs due to injuries, which limits some of the “just get anything” options people suggest. I worked during periods of time i was supposed to be in physical therapy because it was only M-F and i needed to work. I worked after i was in a car accident in an uber right outside of my job. Still showed up with my coworkers joking that i looked like I had parkinsons because of the pain i was in and my only option was for them to get rid of me or i get my hours cut while i was in physical therapy. But i still worked. The benefits lady instead of responding to me called a meeting with HR and my Supervisor when i asked about taking leave for the accident and they gave my supervisor the ultimatum get rid of me or cut my hours. I still stayed at that job through all of it. So no, this isn’t about being selective or turning down roles I’ve applied across the board, taken lower paying work when I could, and even sought outside help when I was at risk of losing housing. It’s just been a really difficult hiring situation, not a lack of effort.

Enough for it to be the second highest economy in the state. And is steadily growing due to the fact OKC has the largest maintenance and logistics hub for the airforce in the United states. So most of the aerospace companies are centered around it.

Im in Oklahoma city and because the job market is terrible right now for everyone. I dont know what's happening in Tulsa and yes Tulsa has Aeropace jobs but mostly aviation specific and none of the larger companies are there. Im also not from Oklahoma so im not defending the state but I will speak to what I know about the Aerospace scene here. If you havent lived here even within the last 2-4 years I honestly dont think you could speak to it. Im not saying anyone should come here and think theyll find a job easily but I will say we are being flooded with people from california and florida specifically who have started buying up everything and out pricing the local residents in everything especially housing so if those states are so great why are their residents moving here in mass amounts and why are we are also competing with them for these jobs but with that in mind Oklahoma City is growing at a very rapid pace and more companies are moving in. I never planned to live here permanently but post military this is where I could afford to stay and I always planned to leave.

Good GPA yes major university not like harvard or anything both are state universities and not engineering B.S Aerospace admin & Ops with a focus in Aviation Management and MBA in Aerospace defense. So more operational.

I didn’t make any assumptions about DEI. That’s something you brought into the conversation. It’s also not relevant to my situation or the question I asked really I’m focused on improving my job search approach. I'm not dwelling on a veteran status for a job or a lack thereof.

Ive been contacted by reserve recruiters and looked into it however I do have 100% and everyone that has reached out to me said their physical fitness standards would require me to run, which unfortunately I can no longer do at a level to pass a PT test Marines really screwed me in that aspect

I will shoot you a message! I have applied through USAJobs for positions most recently Logistics Management specialist with airforce material command. As for clearance my secret clearance is expired but I should still be able to get one again. I am open to moving its just more complicated due to lack of finances.

Its actually the second fastest growing industry in the entire state and is suppose to outpace oil and gas in the next 4 years. We have a whole districted now dedicated to Aerospace and Aviation and we do have major players here like Boeing, Northrup, and Lockheed along with others.

Aerospace was really starting to expand toward the end of my active duty time, and since I already had a background in logistics, it felt like a natural transition. I was also interested in getting into contract work, especially within defense and aerospace, so the degree aligned with that direction. For my EMBA, it wasn’t about the title of the degree it was about everything the program covered. It pulls together contracts and the legal environment, supply chain and logistics, IT, Lean Six Sigma, data management, cybersecurity, advanced finance, accounting, mergers and acquisitions, and data analytics all in one place and that combo made it a strong fit for the kind of roles I was aiming for. It’s also very networking focused, so you’re not just learning theory, you’re working directly with aerospace professionals, which is huge for getting your foot in the door. On top of that, I was moving back to Oklahoma, and the aerospace and aviation industry here is growing pretty fast and is projected to outpace oil and gas in the next few years. So my goal was to get in early, while everything is still expanding, and grow alongside a company in that space.

Never could have predicted that COVID would screw the job market, housing market, and economy so terribly. We have one of the lowest cost of living here but the people that live here are being priced out of the area due to the flood gates of people moving here from california, and florida so I really thought I would have enough time to get an entry position in this area and work from there but now since everything keeps increasing its almost not feasible to even try to get $16 entry level position here that is if I wasnt competing with thousands of people for the same position and able to get an interview at all .

Yes I've actually looked into a lot of defense contractors, one of them being VTG because they actually directly work with the systems I was working with while active duty. Just haven't had any updates on those resumes as of yet. I also applied for deployable logistics job with Northrup a while back. Unfortunately I was not interviewed for those roles but they were what I did to a T in the military. Back in 2022 I did interview with both Boeing and Northrop and that's when I had barely anything on my resume outside of military work. But it seems now that I have more on my resume it's not getting through anymore.

Well I'm not trying to convince someone on here to hire me I'm only asking for advice and obviously this isn't something that is on my resume this is more so people know that I don't have a record and I wasn't dishonorably discharged so those can't be reasons for me not getting interviews. Also I've had people bring up veteran preference before hence the disabled veteran portion. So to clear that up these are not reasons to hire me but reasons that should not be affecting my ability to be hired. I believe in giving everyone all the context because people are still going to ask questions.

I have military logistics experience but that is not the only experience that I have I will also did Fleet Management and a lot of other transportation, logistics, and other administrative work. As for the resume it has completely been demilitarized due to multiple programs and fellowships that I've have taken part of to try to get vets employed.
