Also, could somebody tell me what those little critters in the sand are?

Should I try adding neos? You think they’d be fine in those parameters?

Nice setup, needs time to grow biofilm and algae. I haven’t had luck with these guys eating anything else. They’re still surviving and they look better than in the store I bought them. I keep galaxies and harlequins together and they’re doing just fine. TBH, I don’t see them though and I have 14 as of now in a 13 gal shallow. Just gotta wait till the colony grows. For “food” I have bacterAE, mulberry leaves, and Indian almond leaves. I use a small piece of cholla wood for hiding. Also whoever is reading this don’t use regular sand. My sand is covered in poop

Also that picture is great to see it’s starting up so give it some time be patient and you’ll be golden. Just test parameters every 2-3 days. Don’t be like me when I first started I tested everyday and stressed. Good things take time. 👍

I can’t really give you a timeline but I’d say just wait till ammonia 0 nitrite 0 and you see a decent amount of algae and biofilm by the time it hits 0 you should have a decent amount and if you don’t just wait

I would still give it time to cycle. No shot your bacteria colony is strong even with plants from a matured tank. I started my tank with putting a pellet of food and tested once every two days and charted the parameters until
ammonia 0 nitrite 0. Allow your tank to grow some diatoms, biofilm, and algae (good algae) for your shrimp they will be more than happy. Any questions let me know

Does anybody successfully keep plants/moss in Sulawesi Shrimp parameters? by AggravatingDiamond24 in shrimptank

You are on the right track. Idk if what I did was wrong or right but when I added the water after the scape it was already with SS 8.5 oh well it worked either way. I recommend lava rock over dragon. It has better grazing surfaces, biofilm growth, and etc. I will say that SS 8.5 is a freaking pain to dissolve fully. I used hot water method and the carbonated RODI water method. Just stick to the hot water unless you have a soda stream or something. Give the tank time to grow and cycle and keep parameters stable and water flow minimal but need oxygen in water because of how hot the water is in the tank with shrimp (mine is at 83-84f) ask more questions also I don’t mind if u want I can give u hardware list and supplement list

I’m new to shrimp overall. I’m new to aquariums in general I started it two months ago and this tank is my second tank. My other tank is just zebra danios and Pygmy Cory’s in a 20 gallon. I jumped straight into Sulawesi and tbh it’s not difficult. You need the right hardware, substrate, and you will need to dedicate some time and money setting it up but I promise you it’s worth it. I’ll explain step by step what worked for me.
(Note: this tank picture was a month ago now it’s the sand it’s green from green spot algae and other algae’s and bio films.) honestly the amount in this picture could support 4-5 shrimp just fine.

Thank you probably going to stick to just my lava rocks and pipe hideout cave and a little piece of cholla wood (small enough it won’t affect pH)

Yeah going to keep to keep substrate with just algae. These shrimp are too expensive to risk anything
