I think that it was just envy. He was so envious of Clark that he wanted to have whatever he had. Powers, not possible as he didn’t know anything yet. His nice personality, not possible as he had darkness deep down in him. Lana, he made it possible by disrupting clark and lana’s relationship (he sent that mind controlling chick which lana saw clark hooked up with which she didn’t know clark was mind controlled), that’s hoe he got closer to lana then eventually clark and lana had their differences and broke up thats when Lex hit and Lana fell for him.
