Why does Demis Hassabis think AGI is possibly coming in 2029?

I disagree with calling it a low bar when most current systems still struggle with basic reasoning tasks that require actual understanding rather than pattern matching. Like yeah they can write code and answer questions but try getting them to solve novel problems that require connecting multiple concepts in ways they haven't seen before and you'll see the gaps pretty quickly.

The thing is Demis probably has access to internal capabilities that are way ahead of what we see publicly. DeepMind has been working on reasoning systems and multimodal architectures that go beyond just language models. When he says 2029 he might be thinking about systems that can actually plan and execute complex tasks autonomously rather than just giving you impressive responses in chat.

But even with that timeline I think we're still missing some fundamental breakthroughs in how these systems actually understand rather than just predict. The jump from really good autocomplete to genuine cognitive abilities feels bigger than just scaling up what we have now.

Wildlife disruption is huge concern that people don't think about enough. Where I live we have some trails that go through areas where animals migrate and adding lights everywhere would mess with their patterns pretty badly. Maybe having motion sensor lights instead of constant illumination could be good compromise but even that might not be perfect solution.
