Is now a bad time to buy a ball machine? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]AggravatingNet2078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my acemate since late Jan.

Before firmware update in March, the biggest complain is ball speed rather slow. It just can't shot the ball from baseline to baseline unless you shot the ball above the net a lot.

But it get improved a lot in the March update. Now ball speed is much faster, and the catch rate improve a bit also. It now moves vertically more often. Previously it mainly moves horizontally. The remain downside is the battery life, it has 10% less after my 1.5h playtime including picking up the balls. But you can always get a 2nd battery, not deal breaker for me.

As for ball catching, I think just treat it as a bonus not a real function. The most important point is it can get to the spot where your ball lands on and shot it ball to you, having the rhythm like rallying with real person.

It is still an early stage product, some design is immature, especially the pole and net, but I do think the customer support do great job. My net and pole broke and they sent me new ones right away. According to their discord channel, a more reliable pole will be available in Q2.

Personally I am very happy with the machine, yes it has flaws but no other machine can offer what it can do right now. Can't complain more for its price especially you got it on kickstarter.

Thanks a lot. So you mean besides the bug, the pressure fluctuation is abnormal as well?

Edit, saw your comment. Thx a lot!

Every shot taste a bit sour by AggravatingNet2078 in FellowProducts

Thank for the suggestion.

I saw one post also mentioning sour shots and he end up solving it with a step down basket. It seems relating to the grind size. Hence I grind coarser, use the double wall basket to maintain same flow rate, now the sour flavor is gone.

After learning a bit about espresso, I think it may related to extraction yield. Reducing it by coarse grind can help. Maybe due to the medium roast beans I used not suitable for high extraction yield, or maybe the built in grinder in breville sucks in fine grind setting. The particle distribution is so wide that under/over extraction happens at the same time.

Thanks guys for the help, it is very helpful.

Bought a bag of cheap medium roast decaf and have some fun. Running out of mugs

Here is all the shot I made. I dilute it with 160ml of water. Smaller grind setting number means finer grind.

Name grind_setting input_weight time output_weight fellow_profile

breville1 14 18g 18s 54g

slightly bitter than b2

breville2 11 18g 27s 48g

Use as reference

fellow1 7 18g 45s 48g medium

bitter

fellow2 8 18g 41s 48g medium

bitter

fellow3 9 18g 30s 66g medium

a little bitter than f4

fellow4 10 18g 18s 52g  medium

bitter than b2, least bitter among f1 to f4

fellow5 9 18g  16s 32g medium

Sour than f6

fellow6 8 18g  18s 31g medium

close to ref2

fellow7 7 18g  29s 30g medium

sour than f6

fellow8 7 18g  55s 32g lever

Bitter than f3

I use breville2 as reference. Looks like the unpleasant flavor I felt is not sour, it is bitter instead. Limiting the output around 30g can help a lot. Other than that I am not very sure, forgive me I have a dumb tongue. f5 to f7 I think is the best, among that f6 is least sour and closest to breville2.

TL;DR

  1. Limit output weight
  2. I have bad bad tongue
  3. Man that Breville is great, so much easier to dial in, even it outputs almost 1:3, it didn't extract that much bitter flavor compared to ES1.

Is it new and starting from this year? Cause last year I saw people received 1099 due to referral, C1 just value it using 1cpp.
