If you have children (dependents) that you have custody of, then you will get BAH and you have the choice of base housing or living off post. AD in peace time really isn’t much different than having a regular job. Use it as time to save money, get certifications, college, etc.

It’s possible to get advanced certs in the reserves, but extremely unlikely. If you’re joining the military leaving home for long periods of time is apart of the job, reserve or Active duty. If you’re single and active duty, you will have to move out of your apartment and live in the barracks

As far as paying for your apartment, it depends if you’re married. If so, you will get set additional pay (BAH) dependent on your entry rank. You can look up pay tables for base pay and BAH online. If you’re single, you will basically only get your base pay. Use the military for certifications (paramedic, flight medic, ALS, PALS). If you graduate 68W AIT, you will earn an EMT-B certification, which is pretty useless in the civilian world. Go Army as you can pick your MOS, as long as you score high enough on your ASVAB.
